Laser welders are awesome tech, but they have some drawbacks. If you need more filler or your sample pieces have any gap whatsoever, it won't work. There are hybrid laser systems out there but I don't imagine that they are affordable for the average shop. There are also some safety concerns; laser refraction to the eye is much worse than UV arc flash.
The tech is interesting and has certain uses, especially in highly-automated creation factories that don't have human eyeballs. However, there's something to be said for a simple $250 welder.
