Great movie, terrible casting.
It was one of the first ones to cast a nigger in a White role in an attempt to change history. There were maybe 6 negros in the entire west during that time period.

I was alive before dirty Harry was made. Dirty Harry was a reaction to what was widely perceived as rampant crime and criminals getting away with things. Clint Eastwood saw a great Gap in the market and a huge appetite for criminals getting Swift Justice and that's where the dirty Harry movies came from. That's why they were so wildly successful.

People also don't realize in a similar sense that the Rocky movies were about the huge desire to have a white man be a contender for the heavyweight championship. There had not been a white man who had done well in boxing in a long time. And although Muhammad Ali had great appeal to both white and black people after he started doing his robidop where he really wasn't fighting he was just letting the other boxes for each other out and a succession of other boxers came along that we're not as exciting as Muhammad Ali but they were not white people really weren't that as interested in boxing anymore. It was a losing a lot of its appeal. People didn't have a boxer they wanted to root for.

Been along came the story of Rocky who was a white guy coming from nowhere who was able to beat the Black champion who clearly was modeled after someone who was braggadocious yet likeable like Muhammad ali. So that's one of the secret background reasons why the movie Rocky was so well received.

A little sample of the cut through bureacracy and the bad guy getting justice that made Dirty Harry so popular with audiences.

One of my favorite films. Eastwood proved himself as a director. Gene Hackman was perfect as LIttle Bill and Richard Harris was great as English Bob. Eastwood has always known that the scum that runs Hollywood isn't worth pissing on if it were on fire.
