AT&T paid bribes to get two major pieces of legislation passed, US gov’t says

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/05/att-paid-bribes-to-get-two-major-pieces-of-legislation-passed-us-govt-says/

The US government has provided more detail on how a former AT&T executive allegedly bribed a powerful state lawmaker's ally in order to obtain legislation favorable to AT&T's business.

Former AT&T Illinois President Paul La Schiazza is set to go on trial in September 2024 after being indicted on charges of conspiracy to unlawfully influence then-Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan. AT&T itself agreed to pay a $23 million fine in October 2022 in connection with the alleged illegal influence campaign and said it was "committed to ensuring that this never happens again."

So did they then rescind the COLR sunset legislation?

AT&T stole 200 billion taxpayer dollars in the 90s under the pretext of overhauling our entire infrastructure with fiber optic. They didn't and kept the money.

That alone is enough to earn a permanent boycott. Never mind that they charge dirtbag rates for dirtbag speeds. All of our telecommunications companies suck, but these guys are the lowest of the low.

Indeed. In a just society those responsible would be plublicly hanged or wood chippered, and the extended family sterilized. This is America, though. These crimials will control our destiny and we will forget about their incomprehensively huge crimes.

I mean, we are currently bitching about this much being laundered through Ukrainian and Israeli excuses now- who the fuck remembers that just as much (far more, mind you, with inflation) was launderened to this one company in the 90s? No one. Our money is worthless, yet it will be drained from us at all cost, and few will remember it, fewer will know why, and fewer will know it even happened.

Michael Madigan was the king of Chicago since 1971.

It's just a criminal network of old greed. They couldn't give a shit about anything but what's in it for them.

Unbelievable, I posted the same article, 25 minutes after you did. What makes it unbelievable is I found the article on DSLReports. I deleted mine...

No worries, Props to you for posting it! How Weird that we both found & posted that within a half hour of each other. I haven't been on that site for years. I was there this morning by chance to see what other providers were in my area, and to price plans.

Great minds think alike. Or sometimes cancel each other out. End result is always more.

did you find anything? i'm with comcast and i would love to get cheaper but faster internet but i had already had a bad experience with att before. just to have a dsl connection of 1.5 mbps and the contractor lied to me telling me it was the fastest speed in the neighborhood. needless to say, that it was shit and i had constant drop outs that's why i had to switch to comcast for a 100 mbps back in the day which was much faster and reliable that from what i had from att. sure it was expensive and still is but they have been bumping speeds regularly. right now i'm getting 600 mbps and i'm paying up for 500.

pricing could be better but whatever!

I didn't find anything better than my current provider. I heard that a provider was laying fiber in the area, I'll see what they offer when everything is in place.
