a lot of zombies these days among young people. They seem to have lost every joy in life. But it's not because they don't drink beer or whatever. That's too easy as an explanation.
It's because they actually see online videos that document people who are born, live and die. The watch it and know they are next.
When we were growing up the old people that die were in history books...or Grandpa has a bad heart so death is expected.... But death is still far away!!! Right?
Well death is not far away for them. They see and watch their favorite Internet streamers die from cancer or whatever.
Death is real and daily and approaching to them.
They don't know how to sit on a porch and watch the evening weather change which brings in the cool winds and makes the trees move. One of my favorite parts of life.
They could be such a great people. They just need a Hitler to give them a target to aim for.

An interesting take on the problem. I'd like to say, in defence of Zers, that being acutely aware of our mortality shouldn't depress us, after all, death is natural, but it would have a hollow ring to my ears.
You don't get the feeling that mortality shouldn't depress us until you're older and you've seen a lot of people die and you've done a lot of things in life and you're starting to run out of new things to do in life becomes a little bit boring. You don't have any of that when you're younger.
As that John cougar song says "life goes on long after the thrill of living is gone"
But you don't know that until most of the new thrills that you're looking forward to have already been experienced and that takes some age and maturity.

All my z kids. Feel an impending sense of doom. We talk about it alot. Other than my oldest, none of them feel a need to do drugs or alcohol. Oldest smokes weeds. But it's basically medicinal for her.
This is very true. I also think the expected amount of work and struggle to gain any semblance of material Independence is much higher than when I was growing up. When I was growing up you knew you could take some aggressive jobs in a field that made money and in five or 10 years reach Financial independence. If I was a kid today starting out with a $100,000 in debt and looking at the landscape and the price of houses and land I'm not sure I would have the feeling that it wouldn't take 30 years. And I'm not sure I'd be willing to set myself on a track for 30 years just to get that.
"They don't know how to sit on a porch and watch the evening weather change which brings in the cool winds and makes the trees move. One of my favorite parts of life.".
Life is a mirage that sometimes cracks and we see the horrors that make up our existence.
No doubt lockdowns were a killer. Possibly some of the problem is that kids these days need to move away from their home towns to pursue jobs and being in a strange city without a support network would be very unpleasant.

When I was a baby, and I had teething pains, dear 'ol Mom used to dip her finger in Whiskey, and rub it on my gums, I had my first "sip" of Beer at 7, and was drinking by 13, and in the bars buy 16. I could not imagine having grown up without Alcohol! I actually very rarely drink these days. Every once in a while whence I'm with my drinking buddies from ny teen years, we tie one on. Ah, I miss my teens!
[warning: somewhat off topic self-indulgent rant coming up].
I'm a tail-end boomer born 1956 and my Mother was one of the "Greatest Generation" (War Generation) who hoped one if not all her children would be creative prodigies and she could bask in their reflected glory. The hideous old thing had me trying to play the piano for six years when I had zilch talent and hated it. One of my music teachers, a nun, used to clip me under the ear when I got a scale wrong. I was probably only 8 yo ffs. Of course kids have suffered worse, much worse, but there's no doubt the unhappy experience embedded in me a certain negative attitude I've never been able to throw which is to suggest parents generally seem to f..k up their children in some respect!
"They fuck you up, your mum and dad. They may not mean to, but they do." (This Be The Verse by Phillip Larkin)
Gen X ran themselves of the rails by being the neediest generation ever. You couldnt just be fine doing/having all the cool things you had to fuck it up (😆), draw attention to your fuck ups and mess it up for the rest of us.

You are talking out of your ass tonight! Seriously, I hope this account has been hijacked! The REAL Gowithit isn't this dense!
What the hell does this even mean?
You couldnt handle a) alcohol B) drug use C) tobacco use D) getting home on time
You also couldnt just get hurt playing with something you had to get hurt cry about it and make them put labels on EVERYTHING!!!
We weren't the reason that labels were slapped on everything, when we got wrecked, nobody knew about it, nobody cared! We could walk in the house with a knife sticking in our side, & our Moms would say, better put a band-aid on that, so it don't get infected!
What makes you think you can talk about things that happened before you were even born?
and dagnabbit everyone is going to hear about it until somebody does!!!
The original statement was a joke. Gen xers are very cautious about not stepping on people toes and keeping their head down. Not at all known for being risk takers so it affected their kids. Hence the "being miserable". Anyone can drink alcohol but i understand why they do not. Everyone around them is either a drunk or a stoner and they can see what it is. God bless gen Z and A.
I credit the millenials who had their hands in those pots. We are truly a blessing indeed.
I have to admit. When I was a teenager all we had to do was drink or do drugs and party. I have 7 kids. 4 oldest are 17 18 20 22. The oldest one is a pot head. The other three have a total of like drinking a glass of champagne on new years and one took an edible once and freaked out. 1 of them has never touched anything at all ever. 3 youngest are all clean. I am a Christian. But I'm not a goody goody Christian like Ned Flanders.
