The cross itself is referenced as a tree. Jesus is called the fruit of Mary's womb. In that sense Jesus is a fruit that hangs from a tree. His mortal frame was the fruit that hangs from the tree of life.
If you wind that back into Gen 3:22, after Adam (mankind) ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, God throws them out of the garden of Eden to prevent them from eating from the tree of life unworthily. By the redemptive sacrifice of Christ, this opened the door for humanity being able to once again partake in the fruit of the tree of life, unto everlasting life.
Long story short: Jesus as a carpenter definitely carries symbolism.
