Yeah, fuck the IRA. But they came about cos of the dynamics at that time, something new can come about under current dynamics, who knows. It is a thing with the Irish, we’re kind of a violent people. Not really in a bad way or anything, it’s just that people here enjoy violence. It’s sort of like the football hooligan culture in England but we don’t really care much about soccer so it’s just something people do on nights out. When I was a younger man that was our weekend every weekend - head out for drinks with mates and then have tear ups with other people out for drinks. That energy can be focused if and when it’s needed, that’s partly what helped the paramilitaries form I think. Could happen again, has happened often enough in the past, only time will tell.

That’s a misconception, it never really had anything to do with religion. We only split people into Catholic and Protestant cos that was the only way we could differentiate the factions. Ulster, our northern province, was planted with British starting in the 17th century. But most of the planters came from Scotland, and ulster conquered Scotland like 1600 years ago after the Romans left Britain, so Scottish and Irish are basically the same people but separated by centuries. This has left us with the same names, same language, all that stuff. But the planters want to remain British and the natives want to be part of Ireland, so the only way we could really tell those different political factions apart was by their religion (Scots are mainly Presbyterian, Irish mainly Catholic).

Tl;dr Ireland has maintained an inter-ethnic conflict for about 400 years without ever even needing a second ethnicity to do it!
