Do you know why he hasn't tried to jail Trump, yet?

The only thing that judge can do is hold Trump in contempt. And, if he tried to incarcerate Trump for contempt, Trump's attorneys can then demand a contempt hearing before a different judge. The next judge can then rule against the 1st judge, which would then make a motion to recuse that judge damn near automatic.

Merchan has been resistant to a motion for refusal because he's playing politics. If he tries to jail Trump for contempt, a different judge will get to make that determination for him.
