Hamida Djandoubi, an immigrant, was the last person to be executed by guillotine in France on September 10, 1977 at Baumettes Prison in Marseille. Djandoubi was convicted of torturing and murdering a young woman. The execution took place out of public view, but 17-year-old Christopher Lee witnessed the event.

It is still a country (the land mass), and a state (a corporation formed of the members that reside in that country). But, indeed France is no longer a nation (derived from 'natal' or 'born of').
