Silent Lucidity by queensryche is probably one of best, most relatable love ballads of the 80's. Not exactly rock in my opinion, but it's a great song.

For me, Van Halen, because it hit the scene earlier with bands like The Police, The Cars, Cheap Trick etc... They were building modern rock.

There was nothing like Van Halen at the time. Most rock sounded like Ted Nugent and Joe Walsh. I remember when VH1 dropped and even as a kid I was like wtf. Nobody played guitar like that. Nobody knew how the fuck he was doing it or how he got that sweet ass tone. Turns out, Ed was a brilliant genius of our time, as big and important as Beethoven and Mozart. He was an innovator and changed guitar amps and how guitars are built. He worked on early versions of the floyd rose with floyd rose to perfect it. He wasn't just about tapping, he did crazy scales that made no sense but sounded mesmerizing. He also taught Dimarzio how to properly wrap a guitar pickup. He changed everything and is single-handedly the reason for the 80's hairband stuff. Randy Rhoads didn't die in a plane crash. He kilt himself when he heard the intro to 'Mean Streets'. Nobody jumped around like Eddie did. He even ran up his wall of amps one time like a fuckin spider. roth may be a jew but at that time he was an incredible frontman. Michael Anthonys backing vocals were also a big key. Big Al is a god of thunder. There will never be anything like that ever again. Its all poser shit from here on out.

Yep, We were lucky to grow up during the era that we did. Everybody was experimenting musically, The amount of raw talent out there during this period was unprecedented! I don't know how any generation can top the mid 70's through the 80's!
