My wife's first language is Spanish, but she got her PhD in English. You get a pretty good grasp of the language writing and defending a dissertation. She still has an accent, and her syntax is a little off sometimes but it's endearing. She hates filthy spics though and always says listening to a Mexican speak Spanish is like listening to a spoon caught in a garbage disposal.
