Lawn Renovation questions

submitted by NoRefunds to AskGoats 1 yearApr 28, 2024 18:00:25 ago (+4/-0)     (AskGoats)

Anyone ever done one themselves? Got a new home 3 years ago and basically the builder was a piece of shit and just dropped all the sod on the ground without topsoil and the lawn never really rooted.

Fast forward to now and it's all fucked up, completely dead in some spots, apparently we have grubs too, and weeds are everywhere. It is infuriating, especially with how much time I've put into the lawn.

Anyway, anyone ever used a skid steer or ditch witch to pull the entire lawn up? I've driven skidsteers before, they are easy af to use.

Also any other tips? I was going to fill it in with free compost from the city then mix topsoil and peetmoss on top, then overseer as much as I can.

Thoughts?

Natural fertilizer:

1 gallon vinegar.
1 cup salt.
Few drops dishwashing soap.
Put in spray bottle.
Spray on anything you want to grow.

Oh yeah totally! That's exactly what I put on my weeds to make them grow faster too.

I tried it yesterday, and my crab grass sprouted into a fully grown apple orchard over night!

I put in a pool once and they drove their cranes and tractors all over the lawn. Even to places where they had no business.

I had a few dump truck loads of ‘garden thunder’ soil delivered and spread in all over. Then I got 12 pallets of sod deliver, four at a time because that’s all I could move in a weekend. It took awhile for it to take, but it worked out well. It was a lot of work.

You gotta unplug it then plug it back in.

Listen to me, whippersnapper: Dump gas on all of it and burn it off and you will never have to mow or weedeat ever again and trust me that would be heaven.

Making airation plugs is probably not required but a good idea. No need to replug the holes.

Look up nemotodes for your grubs. I think now is about the right time to spread them. If you need compost you can get pure mushroom compost and you only need a little bit on top. Or, they can add sand as a drainage filler. Let it grow as much as you can and don't cut it all the time.

Do you use that lawn for anything? Or do you just look at it and cut it?
Put in a garden.
If you are set for grass, try finding a grass variety suitable to your soil condition.

What kind of grass was installed? What climate zone are you in? You can probably do it yourself if you’re willing to do a little labor.

Before you even consider the details.

Call 4-5 local contractors / landscapers and get estimates from them. Most of the estimates should be free of charge, and written out.

You can get specifics of what they would do in a written-itemized estimate. You can even ask them what they would do for each problem you wish to correct. You will also get an idea of what it would cost you for materials needed, and labor (what you would save doing it yourself).

Then research how cheap the materials / equipment rental costs would be if you did it yourself.

Compare the differences between the two and decide.

My next door neighbor has the same exact problem and got the contractor to do his... $14k... I can't also don't want to pay that lol

I get it. But remember just because you have them give a written, itemized estimate does NOT mean you are going to hire them.

Use their own estimate to give you the specifics of what you need to do yourself, and ask them detailed questions when they are at your property.

You can get everything you want answered by them before you do the work yourself.
