Worked as a store clerk for a major retailer back in the late '70's, and it was open season on shoplifters once they got out the door. We were all expected to assist security (who also took his job extremely seriously) when a suspected shoplifting was taking place. Once they were out of the store, it was game on. I remember seeing perps ganged up on tackled, even chased down in the street. Incredible when I think back on it that no one was ever shot or stabbed. Different people, different time.
