I was always told that they were fast but they could only do it for about 5 ft. That's obviously incorrect. Good to know!

They can climb chain link fences and I've seen them in trees overhanging the river. They really only use that speed to run away though. The only time a gator will really ever chase you though is if it's momma protecting a nest or a young brood. For the most part they're big scardy cats.

They can run fast for about 30 to 50 yards.

There are very few stories about how fast they move because few live to tell anyone about it. People in Florida are finding all kinds of things in gator bellies all the time.
