The F-15E is one of the best looking jets ever made. The Flanker series from across the pond look great too.

Still think we should have adopted the YF-23 and not the 22.

I feel almost exactly the same.

To me, the F-15 is THE most beautiful airplane ever invented. I've had a sick love affair with it since I saw a picture of it streaking vertically in to the blue yonder back in 1979.

Fantastic that you also think of the Sukhoi jets as lookers. I love their dipped noses. They look so absolutely predatory and nimble.

And yes yes yes we definitely should have adopted the YF-23. No questions about that. The F-22, while an excellent platform, was adopted strictly for political purposes. (I worked with LM for a time and got the story directly from them.)

Indeed, on all counts! My first internet handle in the 90s and early 00s was StrikeEagle, so there's that. Had die casts and posters of it in my room.

Where the F-15 has the angular lines and looks the business, the SU-27 has the sleek lines and matching agility.

As for that YF program, the 23 was superior on all fronts except for subsonic maneuverability, and for some bizarre reason, the USAF thought VR dogfighting would be on the table. There was a rumor about a potential upgrade with engine mount and duct swiveling for the 23.

They just really wanted to go with Lockheed. One of their justifications was that Northrop had prior problems fulfilling B2 orders.

What I heard directly from a director at LM, was that the gov't assigned the contract to LM based on FAIRNESS. Yep. It was political FAIRNESS since Northrop had the B-2 thing.

Spent some time on an aircraft carrier once. For whatever reason they had an old defunct F-14 sitting in the hanger. I was always surprised at how fucking huge that thing was compared to the other, more modern jets. The F-15 was of a similar size.

Yeah man, the F-14 and F-15 are enormous. Got to sit in the cockpit of an F-15C at one point. Used to see Air and Sea shows as a kid and seeing the F-14 was really something. My family was invited onto a carrier, and yes threose F-14s were enormous, but if you saw them flying low passes, you already figured as much. Depending on the year that you were on that carrier, you may have gotten to see the original F/A-18 Hornet alongside a modern Superhornet; they're very different aircraft, as the latter is a 20% upscaled airframe.

The F-15 and F-14 were large because they played a different role than jets like their Viper and Hornet counterparts. Those aircraft are quite small to see in person. Similarly, the Russian counterparts to the F-15 and 16- the SU-27 and MiG29, you'd find the latter to be positively tiny compared to the former. Walked up to a MiG-29 at the Evergreen Museum in Oregon and that thing was basically a dual-engine, twin tail F-16 in terms of size.

These are all superficial talking points though. If you want to really geek out, we can talk avionics and missiles all day.

I've been to a few of those airshows. Was even voluntold to help people park their cars at one once.

I mostly know what I've worked on and experienced. Like the time I got to work on an old A-6, to restore it for a museum or something. Took fuckin' years of cleaning birdshit and corrosion off that thing to even get it able to be transported without falling apart.

and missiles

The A-10 Warthog regularly drops it's missiles on the deck when in line to launch. Things aren't held in at all and whenever they stop too hard they slide off and everyone has to stop flight ops and wait while the ordies go pick that shit back up. Of course we flip them off and moon them when they drive by. Lol, shit still pisses me off.

Wait a sec, is this a shit test? When were A-10s ever launched from carriers? I don't recall the Navy ever utilizing them... Fuck, even the Air Force never wanted them.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 1 point 1 weekApr 26, 2024 02:54:25 ago (+1/-0)

Some Navy forces primarily work in the desert. Usually they use Army or Air force forward bases. Of course they also have to share in the patrols and guard duties of said bases as well. And when you're launching dozens of aircraft for an op, they have to line up, even on the bigger air fields.

I always liked the Chinook's when they were waiting to be loaded with troops at night. You could see the sand hitting the blades sparking up.

I volunteered at a local airshow probably ten years in a row. Got some pretty good stories from those days. My father was a naval aviator and I grew up listening to some really good stories. Had the great pleasure to meet Chuck Yeager about twenty years ago. Long story short, I can and will absolutely need out on that shit.

There are much cooler things that White people have invented.
Namely.

True but that's a video game pic.

Boeing your thoughts?

[ - ] BushChuck 0 points 1 weekApr 25, 2024 18:10:43 ago (+0/-0)

I want an F-15E, but I'm a Viper driver at heart.

I fly the C variant fairly often, though.
