I would look for it, find it and learn it. There was time to think.

You should have seen the look on my face the day our small town librarian told me about the inter-library lending system, and that, if she didn't have a particular book on the shelf, she could borrow it from another library for me from any other library in the country, even from the universities.

And suddenly, the world, and everything in it, was within my grasp. I became the absolute master of my domain at the age of 12.

Rewind it a bit further and there's no McDonalds, Nintendo or rented movies, so even better real interaction.

Imagine growing up with no TVs in any home anywhere, and book racks in almost every store with everything published out of copyright by small publishers who could set up in their basement and sell to all the independent stores because there's no malls or franchises and most businesses are independent. Plato and westerns for sale at the dry cleaners, and second hand book stores in every neighbourhood. Interacting with White humans who read an uncontrolled variety, and were mostly high schoool drop outs who weren't afraid of thinking or people who thought..

The smart phone is just like the internet- it gives people the opportunity for great progress but it's filled with limitless distractions. The people that don't want people to progress push the distractions to make people zombies.

If you're not a retard you can customize the internet and phones for the former and keep out the latter. The problem is most people are retards so smart phones and internet really just makes it clear which people fall into which category.

My first was a Motorola 1500 in 1988. Big 5+ pound thing, with a corded handset. People looked at me like I had two heads when they saw me talking into a handset with a cord going into my fannypack. I knew people at the time with literal suitcase cell phones, like 30 pounds and 30"x 16"x 8".

Was around the same time when alphanumeric pagers became a thing. Not just a beep and a phone number anymore.

There was a period in the 80's when if a movie director wanted to immediately establish a movie character as being rich and/or powerful, he would have a scene where he was talking emphatically or commandingly chewing some underlings ass on his $4,000 suitcase phone.
