Has anyone ever seen any of these Boston Dynamics robots at some kind of demonstration in real life? Something in public? It’s always some random short video that comes across some social media feed. I’m not saying it’s CGI but I’m also not saying it isn’t.

It's because everything these robots do are all basically choreographed. Every movement has to be preprogrammed into the interface. They are not 'free running'. A life sized moving toy.

Yes. They teach it to go from point A to point B then perform X action. It's no different from the yellow assembly arm robots you see welding cars together or tightening bolts. It's just "Start here, go there, do this, return to start, repeat"

Except the limiting issue is that ever single movement you just saw was all pre-programmed into the robot. It's not a 'free walking' robot - it is literally a life sized toy, thta can not do anything unless all it's movements are programmed first..

It might be directed by the maker, but the final movement, involving things like balance, might not be. They've been using genetic algorithms to get movement like walking for over a decade.

i recall watching a boston dynamics video with technicians explaining their robots maybe 4 years ago. The take away was while it uses all sorts of advanced electronics, gyroscopes and sensors to stand, jump, balance on one foot and locomote etc - everything it does is carefully scripted and programmed by the techs, it has zero independence. It blew my mind.
