The US as a nuclear armed nation doesn't need missle defence it can rely on MAD against serious attacks. Small scale attacks are met in kind - just with better hardware.
You simply cannot defend against every vector of attack - see the ramming a boat into a bridge for inspiration. If your offensive capabilities are high enough you don't need to defend.

The US does need missile defense. Hypersonics break the basics of MAD.
The important distinction to grasp is that even given the current global situation, supposing the u.s. didn't need a significant improvement in either missile or anti-missile technology, critical u.s. proxies DO need such.
