Non-stick coated frying pans are awesome targets.

[ - ] DeusExMachina 1 point 1 weekApr 17, 2024 00:04:45 ago (+1/-0)

Not bad. Better yet, nab some cast iron frying pans of varying sizes from Goodwill and similar places for cheap and then stagger them at varying distances and elevations. Drive some T-posts in and then bend them to seventy degrees or so and hang the pans off them using a bit of 1/2" chain and you have a target range that will outlast you.

The delayed PING! is really quite satisfying. It's not OOK! or OY VEY! or AY CARAMBA! levels of satisfaction but it's as close as you can get without getting in trouble. It's cheap, easy and good practice for varying ranges and elevations. Plus you can paint them up with big red lips and googly eyes for keks.

Plates from goodwill, teddy bears filled with tannerite, and mexicans.

Mexicans filled with tannerite sounds legit.

edit: Teddy bears filled with Mexicans and tannerite sounds even more legit.

Gonna pick up those lead bullets afterwards?

[ - ] JustALover 1 point 2 weeksApr 14, 2024 16:24:23 ago (+1/-0)

The lead quickly rusts creating a shell, preventing the lead from leaking out into the ground.

My uncle supplied me with thousands of ceramic insulators that they used to use on power poles. In 84’, glass shards were found in Gerbers baby food. Safeway stores were dumpstering their stock, I got a hundred cases of that shit. Those were the most fun to shoot. Worked at a bowling alley in 87, the replaced all their pins. I got 400 of those, also fun to shoot.

Now I just shoot interactive targets that reset themselves. Also fun.

Cardboard is easy to acquire in or near most towns and can be shaped to look like anything. Deep woods you can easily do the same with whatever scrap wood you have laying around. Desert,if you have access to water, you can make sand sculptures and use those. Same with snow.

I've made some stands that I make frames for. The stands hold the frame up and I staple some cardboard to the frame. On the cardboard I put up targets.

The stands are made of 2x4s and some bolts. The frames are made of a bundle of cheap 1" latticework wood I got a zillion years ago. The frames are typically blasted apart at the end of the day by my shotgun, and I take the stands home.

There are also black pipe stands that I use to hold up a 10" metal plate. I spraypaint it each time I go out.

We shoot 880yds on my place here going east.
Scrape steel plates and spinners supplement the steady stream of wild pork parades around two large ponds every afternoon

Cans of Budlight or Cokecola...leave them in the sun for a bit so they swell...a center hit with a .300WM 30-06 .270WSM will disintegrate the can...I've hit them with my .50cal and there was nothing to be found, just a mist.

[ - ] MaryXmas 1 point 2 weeksApr 14, 2024 17:55:27 ago (+1/-0)

I am just imagining you with a .50. Kek. I mean, if you are paying 12 bucks a round, get something more fun than a can. Maybe a 2liter at least.

@MaryXmas...I reload all of my ammo...my projectiles are a ballistic composite alloy and are CNC machined in buddy's shop and I've got 75lbs of BMG50 propellant and 5,000 CCI primers...Im set up for 25 different calibers including small, large and mag pistol...I never have to buy ammo. I was just at the range this morning

Any recommendations for hunting rifle? Like 300 yards range? I would love for the recoil to be less than a 12 ga. slug.

[ - ] Zyklonbeekeeper 1 point 2 weeksApr 15, 2024 03:11:28 ago (+1/-0)

@MarryXmas...for what type of game? If it's coyote or deer go with a 22-250...bear and moose, mind you I don't like to hunt bear anymore, you need at least 30-06 or .300WM

[ - ] MaryXmas 1 point 2 weeksApr 15, 2024 14:15:35 ago (+1/-0)

Deer. I have a 45-70 for big stuff. I like the 300wm but I don't have a range local to shoot it at.

[ - ] Zyklonbeekeeper 1 point 1 weekApr 16, 2024 23:27:54 ago (+1/-0)

The 45-70 is like a loaded hammer

I bought some and made a lot of my own. Just look up homemade range targets. Buy ya an old car from a junkyard and put it there somewhere on the range for added fun. Make some tannerite targets.

Spray paint cans?
Probably just plates and such. Dollar tree might be cheaper than goodwill.

Pfizer vial @300 yards.

[ - ] HeyJames 0 points 2 weeksApr 14, 2024 16:05:35 ago (+0/-0)

You can make targets pretty easy with pallet wood and an air nailer. I usually do this before I go shooting and throw them away after.
