A bit of both.
New York is a real, historical place, but that doesn't mean Spiderman is a real historical person.
Jerusalem is a real, historical place, but that doesn't mean Jesus is a real historical person.
Add in to the mix the fact that everything we know about both Spiderman and Jesus were filtered through a subversive Jew, and it's pretty clear nothing in the comics or Bible can be trusted.
