Alright, faggots. Let's talk pools.

submitted by SOULESS to AskUpgoat 1 yearApr 11, 2024 09:37:45 ago (+4/-0)     (AskUpgoat)

I need to redo an old liner pool that is 40x20 feet in my backyard.

It's gonna be around $5,0000 to remove and another $35,000 or so to replace the old liner pool with a smaller fiberglass pool.

What do you guys think? Worth it? Should I look into another type of alternative?

Hit me with your big brain moves here.

How much White Flex-seal could you purchase with $40,000?

That shit is insanely expensive and what they don't tell you is it won't stop it from spreading.

I think there is a liquid version that comes in 1gallon cans.

Have you gotten a quote for actual plaster? A re-plaster should be half that figure.

I live in an area with all seasons so most do liner or fiberglass pools. Would be too expensive for anything else.

I’m in California where everything is plaster, pebble tech and the like. Very few fiberglass although some are actually manufactured right near me.

What are they proposing, drop in a smaller fiberglass and backfill around it?
Edit: I know more about the actual pool equipment than the pool itself.

Get rid of it and fill the hole with sand and soil. Use the space to grow food.

Dig a big ass hole in the back yard and line it with sump pond plastic. lol

[ - ] AugustineOfHippo2 2 points 1 yearApr 11, 2024 10:47:59 ago (+2/-0)

Why replace? You can't just put a new liner into the old pool?

[ - ] SOULESS [op] 0 points 1 yearApr 11, 2024 18:13:49 ago (+0/-0)

I can, but the pool is massive. I'd rather have some yard space for a fire pit or something people can enjoy.

[ - ] Dingo 2 points 1 yearApr 11, 2024 16:03:06 ago (+2/-0)

I have personally helped two people fill in their swimming pools after they gave up with the maintanence costs and frustration (mostly never ending leaks). I also personally know one that held on to the pool only to now have a 20 year hole in his yard that he can't use and has a bunch of stinky water in it (basically it turned into a leaky nature pond).

If it was me, I'd look to fill it in. Garden?

[ - ] SOULESS [op] 0 points 1 yearApr 11, 2024 18:09:40 ago (+0/-0)

Liner pools need to be replaced every 5-10 years. I would go the fiberglass route if I had it redone.

Everyone looks at me like I'm crazy in RL when I talk about getting rid of it though.

Replacing the liner should be a lot cheaper.

Whether something is worthwhile depends entirely on your judgment. Whether something is rational depends a lot on your situation. Fiberlass is more durable and easier to maintain. Think about the lifetime of your existing liner (the one that needs replacing), and figure that you'll need to replace again after the same increment. If it has lasted ten years, figure you'll be buying a new vinyl liner after another ten years. Do a little math and ask yourself what's more economical in the long run. How long will you be at your current home? Will the pool be likely to get the same amount of use as it currently does going into the future? Things like that.

If you can get another 10-15 years out of a new vinyl liner, I'd probably do that.

Installing fiberlgass is faster, but I wouldn't let the fact we're quickly coming up on swim season be what makes your choice.

Don't finance a fucking pool, ever. If you're ever going to make that kind of investment in a property, make sure you're getting a return. If you're satisfied with the current setup you have, don't invest in a better pool because you won't see that money again.

The choice you're making has similarities to purchasing a new car. Would you currently be able to justify spending tens of thousands more to upgrade to a higher-tier model of car? If not, you shouldn't do that with your pool either, unless there are particular reasons why doing so would save you money in the long run (your location or other circumstances make it likelier a vinyl system will fail early, etc.).

Yeah. I've got about $80,000 in the bank doing nothing. I need to hit up a few house projects:

- Bathrooms
- Pool
- Kitchen
- Garage
- Basement

It's hard to prioritize though! My main issue with the pool is how much space it takes up. It's HUGE which is the reason I don't want to just re-liner it.

How many gangbang parties you have to host in that pool to make the money back?

[ - ] SOULESS [op] 0 points 1 yearApr 11, 2024 18:17:25 ago (+0/-0)

I make a lot of money. X:

I'm at $30,509.09 so far this year after money set aside for taxes and investing. I'm gonna work myself to the bone so I can work a little on the house and start a family. :)

Convert to gunite and switch to a salt cell... Of course Im in the business so that'll cost more

[ - ] SOULESS [op] 1 point 1 yearApr 11, 2024 18:10:23 ago (+1/-0)

I have a salt cell! It's been fantastic. We can't do gunite here since we have all seasons. They don't hold up well in our winters.

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 1 point 1 yearApr 11, 2024 19:51:17 ago (+1/-0)

Id say don't downgrade. Keep the asset. Seems 5 grand is standard for liner, but with regulation they don't last like they used to. Could also turn it into a pond, I started out on them... Damn I miss the business. I'm not going back this year...

[ - ] SOULESS [op] 0 points 1 yearApr 11, 2024 20:46:47 ago (+0/-0)

Have you ever done natural pools?

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 1 point 1 yearApr 11, 2024 20:54:37 ago (+1/-0)

I have not, but I've seen some cool ones

[ - ] SOULESS [op] 0 points 1 yearApr 11, 2024 21:05:27 ago (+0/-0)

Hm. I know nothing about those, but I have to admit those interest me a little.

I honestly have no idea. Since switching to saltwater it has been incredibly cheap. I just toss a few bags of table grade salt and it basically stays clear all season.

Using chlorine was hell though. If I hadn't switched I probably would have got rid of the pool two years ago without looking back.

[ - ] AugustineOfHippo2 1 point 1 yearApr 11, 2024 21:35:04 ago (+1/-0)

geez, I have exactly the opposite experience. we do the Costco above-ground pools, and I started with a salt pool. that was REALLY hard to keep clear and clean. switched to chlorine two years ago and it was WAY easier and stayed clear all summer. won't do salt again.
