Where I grew up, coal miners were the rich elite. Of course Loretta was proud to be a "coal miners daughter", and she should be, her daddy was of the "elite".. We could only dream of such wealth. No joke. My relatives made the transition from poor to "rich" if they were lucky enough to get a coal mining job. They thanked the union, blessed that they were. Those of us less fortunate, we walked the tracks and picked the coal pieces that fell off the coal trains to heat the house, when we were in one. Funny, everyone knew that the coal miners were rich, but the rest of us never felt poor (mostly).

My wife heard this story from one of my brothers and was teasing me about being "homeless". But I never was homeless, just because you live in a tent in a nomadic lifestyle doesn't mean you are homeless. My dad was dead (brain tumor) and mom had angrily chased off the government social workers offering gibs...."welfare" it's called, but I had a home, it happened to be a leaky tent. The tent where my brothers and mother lived. That made it home.

Bizarre how that follows you around. My wife wants to get a mobile home to go "camping". I'm adamant that we already have a tent, no need to waste the money as I prefer a tent. Even if we could pay cash for the RV behemoth. We're heading out for a couple of days to go camping, the tent is packed, and she's still looking at RV's LOL.

Damn I love this country.

I'm thinking about doing Germinal again. It has some heavy class war vibes. Which I'm more sympathetic to these days. I tried it but couldn't finish in the 2000s. But it was heavy going then.
