The term "Dark Ages" is extremely misleading because it was the birth of the European Monarchies with the Catholic Church as their spiritual guide. Kings became leaders exactly because they represented their people better than a Roman legate, and even the Roman people identified better themselves with this type of government because of how disconnected certain Roman nobles became with their own people, despite some being as powerful as the king.

Expect history to repeat similarly. Leaders more connected to the people despite not having the same upbringing representing them better than their own who were supposed to.

This is a wildly myopic examination that ignores the dominant geopolitical movements of the time.
