I'm against torturing any animal but it looks like the story has exaggerated things unless he did a lot more than what it actually said. He taped its mouth shut and he did take it to a bar to show people before he killed it the same day. There's no discussion of him torturing it other than showing it off in a bar with its mouth taped shut.

It's not ideal but it's also not torture.

It's kind of like if you catch a raccoon or a possum if you're a little kid and you have it in the box to show your parents before you let it go or whatever.
