No way! I've had this La Sierra fitness manual from 1966 in my ebooks folder for years. Enjoy:

Back then, the teenagers looked like grown men rather than greasy shits.

In 8th grade, 1974, I could do 11 pull ups.

Likewise, in 8th grade, I did more sit-ups in a minute than any student in my school by a fair margin.

Gym coach and many of the other students were incredulous, having not witnessed the event (in fairness, I was not known for my athleticism and the guy who was timing me was kind of a fuck-up), so I volunteered to do it again with the whole class watching. I did more the second time.

Fun fact: Many years later and several hundred miles away, Mrs. Fascinus accomplished the same feat at her junior high.

I could only do 10 using my left arm but I could do 12 with my right...then we had the "resistance" pull up where a spotter pulled down on your feet when pulling up, something similar to a cop trying to pull you down from a height when trying to escape and "resist" arrest...the best phys-ed activity was "dodge the bullet"...I know how Yanks like their dodge ball and lawn darts but up here in Kanastan we didn't fuck around man, you'll never know how agile you are until you're dodging .357mag rnds...oh yeah, as for lawn darts, we enjoyed that too but we played differently than you guys, the only rule of the game that was strictly enforced was that the dart had to be tbrown from a distance of no less than 10ft 3in and if the dart didn't penetrate the cardboard body armor of your opponent then it didn't count....but we did get bonus points for plugging an eyeball or eardrum.
And then there was the "mumbly peg" competion.
