He was acting as producer. He was not in the band. Producers are not "Members" of the band. They are just producers who get to say "make this louder", do that part over again, sing it like this, etc... He did try out for the Melvins but they didn't hire him.

The song “Divorced” by The Melvins is alternatingly, really bad, then really good, then bad again.

The middle part of it though makes it one of my favorite weird songs from that era.
