I fought in Vietnam

submitted by anon to AnonWhatever 1 monthMar 24, 2024 23:18:10 ago (+18/-6)     (AnonWhatever)

Didn't believe in the war. Got myself drafted and ended up in the USMC. Going overseas was my last choice and I never wanted to kill anyone.

But damn did it feel good. The first time I shot one was a rush. The real rush came when I injured one and got to finish him off with the knife. Had to do it quickly because the squad was watching.

This attitude of ruthless bloodshed took me far after. Went from selling cars ar Ford to eventually owning one of the biggest dealer networks on the Eastern seaboard until I sold it in 2014.

I told people in public my secret was hard work and persistence and that was a lie. Reality was the blood I drew in Vietnam gave me a taste for killing. And I learned to kill every challenge in life like I did that vietcong which was split open by my knife.

Maybe you're too young to remember but we got spat on and cussed at as we exited the planes coming home. We did not want to fight for these idiots who didn't appreciate our sacrifice anymore

You mistake me for a volunteer. I was forced to go against my will. The only part of the mission that resonated with me was "search and destroy" and killing gooks that needed killing

yeah this post is sus and larp-y as hell, the last year of US military involvement in vietnam was 1973, ~51 years ago and OP was at least 18 when he was drafted, which would make OP the oldest nigger on here at 69 years old--- at minimum, early or middle of the war combat vets taken at that age would be in their mid-to-late 70s now. I have a hard time believing anyone that old (and a veteran of Vietnam) is actually on this small platform. Gulf war vets I could plausibly believe, but Vietnam vets are well into their curtain call and I doubt they're spending their remaining hours on internet shitposting forums talking about how they liked killing people in a sweaty shitty jungle, since the internet isn't part of that generation's culture. I know there are Iraq/Afghanistan vets on here, but their war still falls under current era, so it's obvious as to why they would be here.

It's your choice to believe or not it doesn't matter to me. I have only come to grips with the fact that I liked the killing in the past 10 years as I have retired and had more time to reflect

What a meathead. You, xantha, really need to study some history. I'm a Nam vet, 79, drafted (enlisted) at 20. After my first CSAR, I didn't particularly mind having to eliminate threats. I crewed in SAR helos, mostly North Vietnam.

BSEE/MS electronics engineering, 1975. Worked full time going through, paid it myself, all of it.

Now, having said that, I, and a lot of my generation, were those who designed, built, programmed all this shit you now use. At least try to not be a moron thinking all this tech stuff came later - it didn't. We built every single bit of tech you use, or laid the basic platform for it. People like me gave it up less than 20 years ago, but we never abandoned it. While I refuse to tie myself to a phone based net, I have a pretty decent desktop here, couple of them, which I built myself. And I was running multi-user/multi-tasking in 1979. And yes, we DID have an internet then, although it was far different than this one.

You should learn something before you mouth off. I'm not into name calling, but you really need to get some smarts.

Very few enjoyed the combat. You'll find very few veterans who did. The reason why this is anonymous is because people like me who take pleasure in war killing are not viewed favorably. Your father was a soldier and I was a united States marine

You were a cook, and you killed a rat this one time, and over the years the story grew and grew.

Fake and gay.

Posts as "anon", yet shares enough information (USMC vet, Ford dealership, Eastern seaboard, sold in 2014) that it wouldn't be terribly hard to find them.

"Reality was the blood I drew in Vietnam gave me a taste for killing. And I learned to kill every challenge in life like I did that vietcong which was split open by my knife."

What a load of bullshit. First of all, dudes in their mid 70's have more interest in logging into fidelity.com and looking after their IRA balance of nwo-funds, than combing the web for reddit alternatives that actually allows for free speech. Second of all, no one that came back from that hell would talk shit, especially 53+ years later. Any normal human being would quietly take that to their grave, with solemn, quiet regret. Go back to earning your fed bucks and ..being a general douche

A hateful or resentful thought is a mental poison.

Why do you think your experience killing is what was the key to your success?

[ - ] anon 2577891 1 point 1 monthMar 25, 2024 02:10:04 ago (+1/-0)

split open with a knife

Must have been some knife to get thru all the bone and clothing. Surely it wasn't a kabar or a mark II, they couldn't do that shit.

[ - ] boekanier 0 points 1 monthMar 25, 2024 02:47:21 ago (+0/-0)

you can be very proud of your heroic deeds. No pangs of conscience?

[ - ] anon 2648875 1 point 1 monthMar 25, 2024 13:07:00 ago (+1/-0)

There are always pangs of conscience. However, since most of those who actually fought figured out they weren't fighting for the US, but instead for the guy next to them, and their own survival, conscience takes a back seat on the bus.

Personally, I didn't see many enemy faces, four close up. My work was in the door of a helo, and if I saw muzzle flashes, I just moved the tracer stream there until the muzzle flashes stopped. Since we flew mostly over North Nam, there was little concern about whether it was friendly. Yes, my group picked up downed pilots/crew over the north, mostly. But I did visit Hue quite frequently during Tet, providing fire support and medevac duties. It's really quite hard treating the wounded and then having a conscience about the enemy.

No. I enjoyed it. I have not been violent since my discharge except maybe getting rowdy during church ball.
