Despite the obvious propaganda involved in the neo-con claim there back in those days there was some truth to it. I've read enough Osama and am familiar enough with the Qutbist milieu out of which he sprung to know hardcore Islamists detest American style freedom because we practise it. Democracy (they believe in a caliphate, or Islamic state, erected at the barrel of a rifle or violent revolution), mixing of the sexes, pop-culture, etc. They would probably deny ours is truly freedom. But they definitely don't like it. Nor do they like us spreading it in their lands.

Imo though Osama's primary complaint was US support of Arab governments he didn't like. The US is an obstacle to these guys coming to power in propping up these Gulf monarchies.
