Once upon a time in america was definitely not a movie that portrayed Jews in a bad light, I don't think that's why Sergio Leone made made that movie at all. I don't disagree with the statements but there's no way the movie was a response to that.

As someone who is half-Italian American this statement is murky. A more accurate statement would be that a Jewish mafia ran concurrently with the Italian mafia and their misdeeds were less publicized and/or blamed on the Italian mob. The Italian mob precedes Italian and Jewish immigration to America.

The Godfather movies (definitely 2, and I think 1) certainly had jew mafia bosses that were major characters. But that's as close as it's come to my knowledge. It was refreshing to see it though. Couldn't get away with that today unless the jew boss was a Mary Sue type.
