Depends on the location. Ring and CCTV cameras in neighborhoods. It can be a big problem if you own property that you're not occupying. Even people on long vacations have returned to find squatters in their house that the police can't remove.

Depends on your location. A woman (jew?) just went to jail for changing the locks. If she had shot them, prison for murder.

In most places, you need to be creative and discreet to get them out once they've established residency. It's as little as 30 days in some places. If they're a renter turned squatter, the law will be on their side in too many places.

Point is, if you own rental or extra property, you need to be vigilant in legal knowledge and defending it. Same goes for being away on a long vacation. Florida has changed their laws to give cops rights to give them the bum rush, but it's iffy elsewhere.

You raise some great points. One other thing to consider: who is this most likely to happen to? A family already living in the home? Or a landlord who owns the property (and multiple others), but doesn't live there and leaves it unoccupied? Maybe I'm missing something, but this would seem like something that moreso affects those landlords who buy multiple properties and jack up the rent. Not saying that makes it right, but I just can't see this affecting the average working class families as much.
