There's a reason why American companies have to send people to China to ensure that the end product quality is up to theirs. The Chinese have a habit of delivering what they feel is good enough.

I worked for a dude who 'invented' a thing. He was shopping Chinese companies for one that would make his product just cheap enough that it would break soon, so they have to buy more

No need for planned obsolescence with the Chinese in the manufacturing game, I guess.

Pig iron, maybe?

This calls to mind the story of the "Great Leap Forward", when Mao tried to launch a bunch of programs that'd make China into an industrial superpower.

One of the programs was called "the four pests campaign", where the government instructed civilian populations to exterminate mosquitoes, rats, flies, and sparrows. Doesn't sound like a bad idea at first, right? We'd be a lot better off without mosquitoes, rats, and flies spreading diseases and such. And those damned sparrows eat a lot of grain every year.

So, the Chinese joyfully set about destroying the sparrow population of China. They said it was "Fun". In that first year, their harvests were about 30% greater due to the killing of the sparrows- A big win for the Chinese, right?

Wrong. The next two-three years held a devastating famine which starved around 60 million to death. See, the sparrows ate some grain, sure... but they ate a lot more locusts.

"And by our own hand did every last bird lie silent in their puddles, the air barren of song as the clouds drifted away. For killing their greatest enemy, the locusts noisily thanked us and turned their jaws on our crops, swallowing our greed whole."

"Millions starved, and as we became skinnier and skinnier, as our leaders became fatter and fatter."
