Remember the model toy car kits that you put together? Do those still exist?

submitted by CoronaHoax to AskUpgoat 1.2 yearsMar 19, 2024 21:25:24 ago (+6/-2)     (AskUpgoat)

I remember they used to come in different difficulties... The easiest just being snap together only.

Do these still really exist? Does anyone know the brands please?

We had the balsam wood model planes that were powered by rubber bands. Pops used to get us those at the local Ace hardware store.

I built several of these and my mom destroyed every single one of them. I thought she was just a fucking dumbass but after the 5th one, it had to be on purpose. She also took all my old toys, like a literal original millennium falcon, all my gi Joe's and other shit and put them outside in the sun to melt.

My cousin collected 2 copies of every marvel and DC comic that ever came out. He had one to read and one to never open. He went to college and my uncle, my mom's brother, put all the comics outside to get rained on and fucked up. I really fucking hate boomers.

Me and my older brothers brought the sci-fi comic magazine 2000AD from the mid 70'S. i inherited them all when they both moved out (was probably around 14-15). Had around 700 magazines - missing maybe around 90 or so copies in total - we began buying religiously from about number 77 iirc (earliest one i had was number 11 that i picked from the local DR's waiting room as a kid - thanks DR claridge).
Had them all sequentially ordered and packed in a two large boxes, taped up and labelled and put them up in the rafters of the garage.
My father took them out one day and burnt them all in a 44-gallon drum along with all my old school reports and sports certificates / awards and school photo's etc because 'they were cluttering up the garage and making a mess, and if you wanted to keep them you should've put them somewhere safe and out of the way!!'.
Boomers are something else alright.
The cunt was never wrong and even when he clearly was - he still wasn't - you were..

Ahh, I was on the phone when I looked those up. I thought those were built-it-yourself models. My bad!

Someone in the neighborhood has the coupe version of this, in super terrible shape. I see it in the Vons parking lot from time to time.

[ - ] Sleazy 1 point 1.2 yearsMar 19, 2024 21:37:54 ago (+1/-0)

of course they still exist

[ - ] ilikeskittles 1 point 1.2 yearsMar 19, 2024 21:28:17 ago (+2/-1)

Was it Revel? Or similar?

[ - ] CoronaHoax [op] 2 points 1.2 yearsMar 19, 2024 21:33:05 ago (+4/-2)

Thanks! I was just about to post I think I may have found it and it may be Revell! They do seem to have levels etc and a huge selection.

Crazy how far in to the bowels of existence I had to go to find it... Found some interesting things a long the way.

Modern search engines are really suppressing some cool shit.

Modern search engines are really suppressing some cool shit.

As the jews constrict the internet more and more, it will become more and more useless.

Tried to search for the proper size hole saw for a soda can. Couldn't find it for anything across many search engines. So I had to do it manually.

Took my digital calipers to a can and measured it out, tested against the hole saws I did have, and ordered the proper size after checking several of the local stores. 45mm by the by.

I'll know if I got it right when it arrives. I really hate certain aspects of the modern age. The stupidest shit becomes a fucking slog just because it doesn't promote the newest zeitgeist.

Oh, and if you like models, check Japanese websites (or hobby shops if you're there). They have huge selections of all sorts of stuff to build.

There was two companies. One was better than the other. Can’t remember the other one.

[ - ] bobdole9 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 20, 2024 12:56:19 ago (+0/-0)

Model cars were stocked during Christmas at Walmart...likely find something there.

[ - ] Looneyskiproony 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 20, 2024 07:20:20 ago (+0/-0)

Yes I still build them . Hobby lobby or online. The classics are being reproduced. 25 to 30 dollars a box.

[ - ] Thyhorrorcosmic103 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 20, 2024 03:03:11 ago (+0/-0)

Tamiya is the best.

[ - ] AngryWhiteKeyboardWarrior 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 20, 2024 02:34:13 ago (+0/-0)

I used to build the planes, not so much the cars.

I only ever see them in specialty hobby shops now, where before you used to find them sometimes in general department stores too.

And the prices are insane.

Feels like a dying hobby. One more step towards Idiocracy.

One more step towards Idiocracy.

Exactly I haven't looked for these in awhile but I was like how could this die out? This was such an important thing for the development of a kid / something to do as an adult.

Most cities have a chapter of the ‘scale modelers society’. Find out when their annual show is happening. I’ve never seen so many model kits for sale before.

I built about 50 models in the 70’s and 80’s. When I was moving out of my parent’s house, I asked my brother if he wanted all the models in my room. He took 6, then he said we should shoot the rest. What a great idea. We took them to the sandpit, burned some, shot some, blew some up with m-80’s. It was one of the best days we ever had.

Your brother is a wise man.

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 20, 2024 00:20:54 ago (+0/-0)

There's an entire aisle of them at my local Wallmart.

[ - ] texasblood 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 19, 2024 23:58:03 ago (+0/-0)

Hobby Lobby still stocks plenty

[ - ] fnbs 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 19, 2024 23:07:38 ago (+1/-1)

Still at the hobby shops, around $25...i remember when they were $3.50

[ - ] TheYiddler 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 20, 2024 06:25:25 ago (+0/-0)

You're going to put $500 or more of labor into building it.

[ - ] fnbs 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 19, 2024 23:06:23 ago (+1/-1)

I Use to like Ertl brand, they were colored out of the box

[ - ] Dirtydyno 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 19, 2024 23:04:06 ago (+0/-0)

I looked at the models at hobby lobby not too long ago. It appears that the remaining manufacturers, haven't bought/made any new injection molds since the mid eighties, when it comes to cars.

[ - ] lord_nougat 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 19, 2024 22:16:06 ago (+1/-1)

I used to waste so much of my allowance on those things. I would build better hotrods than they sold as kits. There wan particular Adam-12 cop car model, on which I found they'd included a really nice cutout for a blower or other awesome intake, so I cut it out and installed a model blower from something else. I also made ignition wires to add from phone cable wires. I was pretty proud of that.

I also made a custom exhaust for it, made largely of the flash frame stuff, glued together to make what I wanted it to be.

My psycho mom smashed that one in one of her tirades. I was done with her and her bullshit at that point, and initiated my official rebellion, which my brother reminded me of, in disturbingly glowing ways. I didn't want to remember that shit; she's a nice old lady now.

[ - ] lord_nougat 0 points 1.2 yearsMar 19, 2024 22:08:53 ago (+1/-1)

There's a shop in our dying downtown that still has these.

I used to go looking for kits of cars I have or like. I have given up, my tastes are just not cool enough, or something; they never have any. They have some pretty epic looking aircraft models, though...

[ - ] germ22 -1 points 1.2 yearsMar 19, 2024 22:55:02 ago (+0/-1)

I had one of these bad boys. Been thinking about buying one again.
