The goal of this exercise was to make 5+5+5=550 by adding one line, The goal of the problem wasn't to NOT make it equal to 550! My guess is they'd be arguing, and fighting, it the kid had dropped the equal sign! IF dropping the equal sign were an option, the young kid would have opted for it.
