Conservatism is a poor replacement for an actual Right Wing. Conservatism is defense only and no offense is ever allowed. Once the Left takes something from you, it's gone forever and you're a racist Nazi for trying to get it back. My gut feeling is that Conservatism was "given" to people to keep them from going full Right.
