Yeah I never lost my phone and if its stolen its not like the cops will do shit unless you can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a white did it.

So we know what its for.

They showed us by making "being out without a phone" almost a criminal offense now.

You can turn it off with a Faraday bag.

I tested a "Faraday" box and Bluetooth and WiFi went through just fine. Also remember that a phone can still log data locally when it has no connection to the Internet, then upload it later.

I have two Faraday bags sized for a cell phone. I have tested phone signal, WiFi and Bluetooth. No signal penetrates the bags.
The phone can log intermittent data when removed, but I don't see how it could even log locations if it can't get a signal.
Edit: I should add that I experimented with a gps logging app that didn't work when the phone was in the bag.

Do you have a recommended brand / manufacturer?

These are like what I have.
I doubt brand matters much, they're all made in China anyway.

Bluetooth and WiFi went through just fine

Then you did not have a real Faraday cage.

Good point. Only buy from places with free returns, and test yours carefully.

I just got a big sheet of Faraday fabric and did some tests with Bluetooth. To my surprise even a tiny opening lets the signal out. It's all folded up with the phone in the middle, and if the layers weren't pressed down all around the signal would leak. For whatever reason I saw the signals as not being able to "turn" inside the enclosure to get to holes. Apparently they can.

Just goes to show the importance of testing such shields before trusting them. Now I know it does work and need to find the holes in the enclosures I had tested before. So small velcro cases won't work if there is a small gap where the velcro holds it shut. Pretty cool stuff.

The maximum size holes that you can have in the Faraday cage without compromising it's shielding capabilities is related to the wavelength of the frequency you are trying to block. Only solid metal walls will block all EM frequencies, but a cage can be made of a mesh that will block a specific range of frequencies but it needs to be 'tuned' to what you are trying to block

Edit to add: I did a quick bit of math... a hole size of less than one-tenth of the wavelength is a good starting point for a Faraday mesh but the conductivity of your shielding material and how thick it is also matters. Bluetooth has a wave length of about 6cm-12cm so I was expecting that your cage could tolerate holes up to 6mm... but your experimental results seem to indicate you have much less tolerance. It goes to show that real world validation of theory is always required. Good on you for testing.

Wouldn't removing the SIM card be just as effective?

[ - ] KyleIsThisTall 2 points 1 monthMar 18, 2024 12:12:55 ago (+2/-0)

SIM card is just subscriber information. They can still check the IMEI. How do you think they authenticate? IMEI connected to SIM. That's just for the customer side. The phones still communicate with the towers to verify.

[ - ] BoozyB 1 point 1 monthMar 18, 2024 10:15:46 ago (+1/-0)

Maybe, but that's not as convenient.
A phone without a sim will log the location of a wi-fi signal.

Fair point. A "plus and" scenario if you need to be free.

Graphene os

if they want to listen to you and track you they will do it one way or another

When triangulation with cell towers becomes just too cumbersome.

[ - ] KyleIsThisTall 0 points 1 monthMar 18, 2024 12:10:36 ago (+0/-0)

lol you think WOL is new? Far field communication? They have been able to do this on wifi and bluetooth since those technologies were prevalent in every coffeeshop.

[ - ] CoronaHoax 0 points 1 monthMar 18, 2024 08:58:50 ago (+1/-1)

No “smart” phone has ever been able to be fully turned off.

[ - ] BoozyB 0 points 1 monthMar 18, 2024 10:16:22 ago (+0/-0)

Not since the days of removable batteries.

[ - ] KyleIsThisTall 0 points 1 monthMar 18, 2024 12:14:31 ago (+0/-0)

And even then some components could be powered by NFC.
