Anyone here use a flip phone?

submitted by TheOriginal1Icemonkey to AskUpgoat 1 monthMar 17, 2024 18:36:46 ago (+17/-0)     (AskUpgoat)

My phone sucks. Barely useable. It’s a AT&T free phone and it’s time to upgrade. I need a phone only for calls and some texting

Member that nextel walkietalkie phone? That thing was cool. I miss those.

I used a flip phone as a reactive target some decade or two ago...

Those walkie talkies were a goldmine...one minute minimum fee for each "message".

Trick was to get anyone else to use it.

Niggers loved them.

[ - ] lord_nougat 2 points 1 monthMar 17, 2024 20:28:58 ago (+2/-0)

Gross, but true.

My whole IT team used them extensively. They were exceptionally useful for what we were doing. Often trying to figure out just what was wrong with T1 installations to remote offices to prove it was telcom fuckery, which it always was. Except for this one time we had a bad CSI/DSU module in a Cisco 2600. "Good" times, man...

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 3 points 1 monthMar 17, 2024 21:22:45 ago (+3/-0)

Cisco

Fuck, that's a name I haven't heard in awhile.

[ - ] lord_nougat 1 point 1 monthMar 17, 2024 21:27:19 ago (+1/-0)

They were something once.

Their ios [non-apple] interface on those routers [and switches and stuff] was cool. Maybe it still is, I got out of that level at that point, becoming a full fledged UNIX sysadmin type, which had been my goal, for whatever reason...

At least that career move did pay off, sort of.

One of my colleagues still had one of those, too! He loved that thing, it just worked. That would have been around '93 - '94'. Man, kids, those days!

I was still using one of these.

[ - ] TomMacdonald 1 point 1 monthMar 17, 2024 20:51:23 ago (+1/-0)

My dad had one of those. His number was 4691150

[ - ] lord_nougat 2 points 1 monthMar 17, 2024 20:55:31 ago (+2/-0)

Mine was 8675309.
I got a weird amount of wrong numbers for some guy named 'danny' or something...

I used to have a Nextel for work. Those were cool.

I can still hear that two-way beep in my head. Also, they'd survive being ground-zero in a nuclear blast.

Not anymore and I miss my old flip phone. I've been using smart phone for about 8 years now and usually leave it on my desk when i go somewhere. lol

[ - ] SilentByAssociation 3 points 1 monthMar 17, 2024 20:57:27 ago (+3/-0)

My dad uses a flip phone. I'll follow up with whatever model it is at some point this week.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey [op] 1 point 1 monthMar 17, 2024 22:30:04 ago (+1/-0)

Please do. Thank you.✌️

wagers on Jitterbug

[ - ] ProudRebel 3 points 1 monthMar 17, 2024 19:02:04 ago (+3/-0)

Yep. Samsung flip 3 and I love it. I never notice the fold in the screen and love being able to carry it in my front pocket. Initially I had concern the battery life wouldn't be up to par. It's just as long lasting as my old phone. I'll never buy another regular model.

[ - ] KyleIsThisTall 3 points 1 monthMar 17, 2024 19:19:29 ago (+3/-0)

That's not a flip phone. That's a folding smartphone

You don't think he gets the irony? That's the point of the statement and it's hilarious.

not worried about the radiation?

[ - ] we_kill_creativity 2 points 1 monthMar 17, 2024 19:36:11 ago (+2/-0)

I do, it's a cheap 50 dollar one at walmart. I love it. Although the best flip phone I can think of currently is actually the Kerosera (sp?). Probably about a hundred dollars and makes for a great Bluetooth mp3 player for music and podcasts.

[ - ] bobdole9 2 points 1 monthMar 17, 2024 19:45:44 ago (+2/-0)

I never considered a flip phone as a mp3 player before.

Meanwhile I'm trying to find a way to "refurbish" my iPod Video.

[ - ] we_kill_creativity 0 points 1 monthMar 17, 2024 21:33:50 ago (+0/-0)

What do you mean "refurbish my iPod Video"?

[ - ] bobdole9 1 point 1 monthMar 17, 2024 21:55:49 ago (+1/-0)

Trying to reverse engineer the iPod software to a storage device. My current device is almost 15 years old and one day it will finally give up. I'd like to keep the old shitty iPod method of mp3 organization, since it's been my way for 20 years...it works great in my 10 year old car.

I used an alcatel go flip 3 not too long ago. It will work for your needs.

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey [op] 0 points 1 monthMar 19, 2024 23:14:25 ago (+0/-0)

Looking in to it.

[ - ] GottaGasEmAll 1 point 1 monthMar 17, 2024 21:39:57 ago (+1/-0)

texting on a number pad is hell.

[ - ] King_Leopold_II 1 point 1 monthMar 18, 2024 03:55:15 ago (+1/-0)

There’s a learning curve. Than it’s fairly easy.

[ - ] Leveraction 1 point 1 monthMar 17, 2024 21:30:12 ago (+1/-0)

Wish i still had my flip phone, especially for removing the battery. But then the goiberment got involved and fucked things up as usual. Seems to me if I'm paying for the damn thing, I should be able to remove the battery and remove the tracking bullshit. Oh wait, that might be under a republic which we no longer have.

[ - ] Sal_180 0 points 1 monthMar 17, 2024 22:26:22 ago (+0/-0)

EU is changing that. Making batteries easily removable is going to be compulsory

[ - ] fnbs 1 point 1 monthMar 17, 2024 20:49:34 ago (+1/-0)

I do but its a piece of shit one from consumer cellular.. but i only pay $25 a month so its tolerable

[ - ] iSnark 1 point 1 monthMar 17, 2024 20:42:44 ago (+1/-0)

I rocked one of these for several years: (Mine was a darker blue)
Loved that phone.

Why not go on swappa.com, pick up an unlocked pixel 4a for 50 bucks and reimage it with grapheneos? Privacy OS. PLus you can install app's (google play runs in a sandbox) - https://grapheneos.org/

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey [op] 0 points 1 monthMar 17, 2024 20:56:56 ago (+0/-0)

I don’t even know what the fuck you just said. Dude, I use a flip phone.

[ - ] bobdole9 0 points 1 monthMar 17, 2024 21:56:47 ago (+0/-0)

Speak Boomer To Me 🎵

He's suggesting a smartphone sans Android or Apple crap.

[ - ] clymer 0 points 1 monthMar 18, 2024 05:51:27 ago (+0/-0)

Oh sorry, I was just guessing that you use a flip phone for privacy reasons. Off the shelf Android and Apple OS will be recording / spying on you, but there are privacy options with smart phones that are affordable. I use graphene on a pixel 4a, can use basically any app, but I keep the apps limited to what I need to keep the threat surface minimal

[ - ] autotic 0 points 1 monthMar 18, 2024 08:20:48 ago (+0/-0)

Because a Pixel 4 isn't supported by Graphene. But also nobody needs a 6 inch slab of social cancer that is the smartphone.

[ - ] clymer 0 points 1 monthMar 18, 2024 10:46:07 ago (+0/-0)

go on the graphene website before spouting out nonsense.
bramble (Pixel 4a (5G)) (extended support)
sunfish (Pixel 4a) (extended support)
coral (Pixel 4 XL) (extended support)
flame (Pixel 4) (extended support)

(was trying to suggest an affordable option to install a privacy OS. Get a pixel 6 if you want more than security updates)
-------------
Use your fucking flip phone. I will take advantage of modern tech.

[ - ] clymer 0 points 1 monthMar 18, 2024 13:14:20 ago (+0/-0)

icemonkey, ignore this clueless troglodyte, I need to upgrade this pixel anyway, if you're interested DM me, I will order a pixel 6x, factory restore this one / send it to you. Plug in your SIM and have fun. If you like it, send me $50 back via venmo or cashapp (offer ONLY applies to icemonkey, I can sell this on ebay for $150 with GrapheneOS pre-installed). You will have to wait for it, until I source replacement on ebay, re-image it and verify new phone workability

[ - ] bobdole9 1 point 1 monthMar 17, 2024 19:43:58 ago (+1/-0)

Do you need a flip phone or would a brick or sliding keyboard work?

[ - ] BushChuck 1 point 1 monthMar 18, 2024 08:43:18 ago (+1/-0)

Nokia slide phones were the absolute tits.

[ - ] autotic 0 points 1 monthMar 18, 2024 08:22:27 ago (+0/-0)

Kyocera. They are still Android surveillance devices but at least the battery is removable.

[ - ] Rowdybme 0 points 1 monthMar 18, 2024 02:52:30 ago (+0/-0)

No. Cuz I don't give a shut what the nsa does. I don't do anything illegal.

[ - ] bobdole9 0 points 1 monthMar 18, 2024 09:20:29 ago (+0/-0)

Sometimes old people just want simple things...like the Jitterbug.

[ - ] Master_Foo 0 points 1 monthMar 18, 2024 02:33:41 ago (+0/-0)

Good luck getting one that's compatible with the upgraded cell infrastructure.
I had a flip phone until they phased out 3G.
On the plus side, Tracfone sent me a decent Android smartphone for free.

[ - ] gardella 0 points 1 monthMar 17, 2024 19:00:01 ago (+1/-1)

i have a 3310 3g, unfortunately they a shutting down the 3g networks i'll be updating to a nokia 225, not a flip phone fan. nokia still makes a 2780 flipper maybe a cat s22 if you need a more rugged unit.
