Western scientists can't prove dark matter exists either, so what the hell does it matter? It's all conjectural and mostly based on some mathematical assumptions. This is another "trust the science" situation because no one understands the physics or mathematics involved and the media trumpets this kind of stuff as proven (with the disclaimer "scientists believe"). People believe it because they don't want to look like some kind of anti-intellectual cynic.
