Question to all you other Linux-Tards out there...

submitted by iSnark to Linux 1 monthMar 15, 2024 03:15:30 ago (+2/-0)     (Linux)

So, I started with Mint in about 2016, had brief stops at Parrot & Kali, Passed "GO", collected 200 Bucks! Went on to Manjaro, Artix, Garuda, & Endeavor, Then settled on Debian for quite a spell... What would you Autists recommend my next stop be? I'm really impressed with Debian, so I'm looking for something that has that same level of GUI-based performance and durability. This is just tooling around, Daily Drive bullshit... No specific need like running high level databases or anything like that. Eager to hear what you guys come up with. Give your reasoning behind your choices.

Go back to Artix. Use Plasma/KDE. BTRFS+LUKS. Zen kernel. Install Apparmor. Get portmaster and pay $100 for one year of SPN. Plasma 6 just released. Its great as a daily driver. I enjoy it. It does everything and runs everything. Even windows apps. PDF-Xchange is in the AUR. Affinity Suite version 1 works excellent with Bottles. Vidya gayms just work using Lutris or Steam. Dolphin is an excellent file manager. QEMU/Virt manager offers excellent performance. I don't know what more to want from this OS.

Only downside is you'll spend a day setting it up and a week or two tweaking it. Then its smooth sailing. I've used it as a daily driver for 10 months. 10 months ago I made this post. https://www.upgoat.net/viewpost?postid=64507c6eac032 . I persevered. All issues resolved. No longer a noob. My opinion matters. sudo pacman -Syu --noconfirm && paru -Syu --noconfirm every day and it keeps booting. About to Rescuezilla clone my desktop drive to my laptop drive and take a business trip for a few days. Everything will be exactly as it is on my desktop. Amazing.

Great feedback Koz, Thanks for the additional link, it was both helpful and entertaining. (Especially the rant on printers., I have an old, and I mean old, Konica Minolta printer, that's a bitch to setup, but once it's setup, it's very stable, that is, until I get a bug up my butt, and screw up my Linux install over some stupid self-inflicted change.)

Sounds like a fun and educational progression.

Just avoid ubuntu, because it is AIDS. I had to install it for this job, and am still stuck with it. I rather liked fedora before that. But that was well over a decade ago so who knows these days.

Ubuntu has it's following, and it shares DNA with Debian, but I've not really warmed up to it. And it got worse with rumors that the Ubuntu Devs were all a bunch of SJW's...

The value of the Ubuntu project really ends at providing package repositories used by better distros, and maybe its server edition if systemd is acceptable.

It also has this weird industry assumption of superiority over anything downstream, and a following of busybodies who exist to replace anything using (for example) Mint with Ubuntu due to being "more popular", which is fallacious logic atop just being incorrect (see also the overrated Git).

ubuntu was okay 15 years ago or so, but with every release, they make it more gay and retarded and remove cool features little by little. Of course, it is linux, so I can sort of cobble them back in, but it is such a pain in the ass. Shuttleworth is faggot.
