I recall a video of Musk meeting with NASA in the early days of SpaceX. And NASA basically used this meeting to make fun of him, call him an amateur, and stick to making his little cars. A reusable rocket was impossible or NASA would have them, claimed NASA. Musk looked like he was going to cry. He thought they were all space explorers, but to NASA it was just a business, and at that time they were the only game in town for getting private satellites off the ground. They even called in retired astronauts to sit in this meeting to laugh at him.

Musk said in his book that this slight was one of the driving forces behind his efforts to perfect the reusable rocket. NASA now goes to SpaceX for putting up satellites, and he’s now getting all of their former customers.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the government tried to nationalize his company. They almost did it with StarLink once they realized his network of satellites had military applications in the Ukrainian cluster fuck.

He should charge NASA double per launch, for that. It was a set up, NASA released the video of the meeting to humiliate him and scare off investors.

Musk had said that meeting was one of his greatest regrets because he smelled a rat going into it and he should have known better. His second greatest regret was that when he was prototyping the rockets, they routinely blew up. Once they had a rocket that seemed reliable, He allowed the ashes of the actor that played ‘Scotty’ on the original Star Trek to be put on the rocket for release into orbit. The rocket didn’t make orbit and crashed in the ocean. Scotty is down there somewhere; a thousand nerds wept. Musk felt really bad about that. Still gets hate mail for it.

It's not all that cheap, at least not yet. They have more work to do before they can recycle hardware. Booster came in way too hot and failed to light engines, probably seriously overestimated the drag it would have coming back in. RCS thrusters on Ship failed in some way as it tumbled out of control all the way into re-entry. Door didn't operate all that smoothly either. They could quickly turn it into an expendable vehicle that'd be competitive for taking stuff to orbit but until they're able to reuse the vehicles the real savings won't kick in.
