I found us innocent of all charges.

[ - ] iSnark [op] 7 points 2 monthsMar 14, 2024 00:30:34 ago (+7/-0)

Considering what we did and went through, I'm surprised there are so many of us still around!

Fucking seriously.

I have no excuse for surviving all my own idiotic follies!

I mean c'mon, We PLAYED with a quarter stick of dynamite, unsupervised, and NO ONE gave a shit! We had bottle rocket wars, where the objective was to nail the Son-of-a-Bitch (your friend) with a molten hot projectile across a ravine or other chasm! Safety Glasses: NOPE!

I still have scars from Roman candles. My cousin has a line through his beard on the right cheek where hair can't grow because I bounced one of his cheek in a fire fight 25 years ago

GOOD TIMES...

This must seem so foreign to anyone born after Gen X, BUT FUCK, we thought we were BULLET PROOF! We had most every situation under control! I think we grew up during the Greatest time ever! We got ourselves in to trouble, and we learned how to get ourselves out of it! it certainly helped, that times were no so jacked up as they are now!

[ - ] KDs_Other_Burner 2 points 2 monthsMar 14, 2024 02:12:25 ago (+2/-0)

I've forgotten more from my teenage years than I remember.

But the fun we had with thermite. And solidox. You don't forget that shit.

[ - ] iSnark [op] 0 points 2 monthsMar 14, 2024 02:18:42 ago (+1/-1)

You had more fun than I did! Thermite? Solidox? What Military base did you live next to?

[ - ] KDs_Other_Burner 0 points 2 monthsMar 14, 2024 02:51:08 ago (+1/-1)

Haha, my Mom had family in New Mexico I spent a few summers with my cousin there in the eighties. Outside Carlsbad.

We'd go out from dawn to dusk to the Caverns and just run absolutely unchecked. My cousin is nearly two years older than me so was a lot more worldly than me at the time. I remember we found an old Buick someone had abandoned, and us sanding it to collect the rust. (iron oxide) We were trying to get into the cash box of a payphone near Route 62, but we hadn't placed the thermite in the right place and it just went through the top plate and wiring the bottom plate before finally meeting its match on the concrete floor.

My aunt and uncle were living pretty poor back then. My uncle used to repair stuff he could like bike frames or whatever to save money or even make a little coin here and there. He was the one who actually owned one of those Solidox welders with the nasty ass pellets instead of a tank. I always hated the things because I could never work fast enough before the pellet burns out but they certainly had other intriguing end user possibilities....

Would have loved to hung out with you & the boys back in the day! You guys would've been right up our alley!

[ - ] Belfuro 2 points 2 monthsMar 14, 2024 02:26:30 ago (+2/-0)

We would fire rockets at each other.
Singing at guy fawkes was normal.

We would fire monkey apples at ourselves.
Take apart a bike pump for the tube.
Tape the thumb from a dishwashing glove on one end.
Op slingshot.

From the age of seven, I'd eat breakfast, grab my army men, had bike will travel.
Came home when it got dark.

Gen x was the last generation. We lived across the golden ages end and know intimately what was taken from us

[ - ] iSnark [op] 4 points 2 monthsMar 14, 2024 02:40:27 ago (+4/-0)

B-I-N-G-fucking_O!

Same! Ate breakfast, Busted ass to get the chores done, got on bike, not seen for 10 hours+, Riding home in the dark! Parents didn't even get out of bed to check on us when we got in...

We were the last generation to experience unadulterated freedom! We didn't have computers, but we were smart, inventive, & resourceful! I pitied the way my kids generation grew up! I wish they could have experienced my childhood!

We had it so good in so many ways.

Fuck I loved my banana 3 speed bike and later a BMX.

Do much nostalgia I wish I could revisit.

[ - ] iSnark [op] 1 point 2 monthsMar 14, 2024 19:22:28 ago (+1/-0)

I managed to hold on to my old Banana-seat Schwinn bike. Someday; I'll restore it.

[ - ] Belfuro 2 points 2 monthsMar 14, 2024 19:30:26 ago (+2/-0)

Now I'm jealous.

I moved around a lot. Each time more and more items were given away or lost.

Now I get nerds for collecting memorabilia.

My first car, a 1975 mk3 Cortina bought for $800 when I was 16.

I did it up and sold it to pay for my first marriage wedding rings for $3000

$30,000 to buy it back today. Ugggh

We did all that before the first gen x existed. And we got a whole box of 72 for $4.99 and loved it. Only blew my thumb off one time too! (they reattached it)

Kill zone for one in a fresh cow pie was around 30 feet.

[ - ] iSnark [op] 1 point 2 monthsMar 14, 2024 03:19:35 ago (+1/-0)

Your generation was, no doubt, influential in forming who we became!

[ - ] inaminit 1 point 2 monthsMar 14, 2024 04:09:12 ago (+1/-0)

[ - ] purityspiral 1 point 2 monthsMar 14, 2024 10:47:48 ago (+1/-0)

[ - ] Moravian 4 points 2 monthsMar 14, 2024 00:36:20 ago (+4/-0)

Because who has the balls to do anything about it?

[ - ] purityspiral 2 points 2 monthsMar 14, 2024 11:25:12 ago (+2/-0)

fuck that I feel like I got blamed for everything, JUST LIKE BACK THEN!

and now here we sit in the apocalypse and the next gen is calling ME a boomer just because I'm over 40 and they think it means "old"

no one gets off their hooks
no one escapes the spiral

[ - ] Lost_In_The_Thinking 1 point 2 monthsMar 14, 2024 00:44:27 ago (+2/-1)

Oh, wahh fucking wahh, latchkey kids. My father was born in 1935 and was a latchkey kid. So many generations think this was a new experience for them. Fuck them, and fuck everyone who feels sorry for themselves thinking their experience is new. I didn't learn about my dad's younger adolescence and teens until decades later, because he never talked about it, mostly because he didn't think it was that extraordinary and didn't need to be discussed. It just wasn't that important. Mind you, this was in the 40s and early 50s, and my grandmother didn't have a TV until 1960, well after my dad moved out.

[ - ] lord_nougat 1 point 2 monthsMar 14, 2024 00:50:42 ago (+1/-0)

You were a garbage pail kid!
