Radon was one of the big scare campaigns of my childhood. Along with killer bees, acid rain, ozone holes, and black mold. If Radon is back then they must be running out of psyops.

The joys of basements. You won't die, but if you live in your basement daily for decades, you might be a little off.

Want to mitigate? Get a PVC pipe from under your slab (usually tied into sump pump) outside and up to the roofline. Using a fan, the suction draws whatever gasses up and out of the area (in theory).

This raises questions.

You can call your
state radon office to find qualified radon mitigators in your
area. Also local companies with radon mitigators are in the
phone book or online. The cost to reduce radon depends
on how your home was built and how you use it. Most
homes can be fixed for about the same cost as other
common home repairs.

How the fuck would you go about fixing this?

Most radon
tests last between 2 and 7 days. It’s as easy as opening a package, and
putting the test kit in the right place. After sending the test kit back to
the address in the package, the company will send your radon test
results in about 2 weeks.

The fuck? Why can't you just test this yourself?

you can buy decent radon meters on amazon in the ~$200 range. you may as well buy your own because that’s what a professional test will cost.

in new england, we have a lot of granite, and with it comes the radon. a basic mitigation system consists of coring a 4” hole in the basement slab, and running a pvc pipe outside to a low-voltage fan that stays on 24/7, and the vent is supposed to go up above the roof edge. the mild vacuum created under the slab is usually sufficient to direct most of the radon out the vent. if you live on the east coast, you likely have a couple local companies that specialize in these units.

our winter radon numbers went down from 30 picocuries down to ~2-3 after the vent was installed.

You've never seen the 4-in PVC pipes running up the side of people's homes with an inline fan?

I don't know how it works either but apparently that's how it is fixed.
