...I have to add my 2cents here...I really came to respect those animals after a day long climb to a mountain top near Banf Alberta...it was end of July in 90 or 91, ground level temp was 72°F at 7.00am MT...at 3.00pm 3/4 up the mountain side, glacial runoff everywhere and the best water in the world, a snow storm hits out of nowhere and we kept pushing upwards...at the top it's a blizzard...we pull ourselves up onto the plateau and theres a herd of Doll Sheep staring at us and theres a lead ram looking at me like "who the fuck are you" and he had a coil on his head that I did not want anything to do with...he snorted once and the entire herd fucked off over the mountain's edge and it's miles to the bottom...we belly crawled to the cliff side to see where they were and holy fuck they were about 50ft down on the rock face that a human could never dream of negotiating, and fearless, even the yew were professional at it...the descent was a killer though and we got back to ground level at around 10.30pm...one of many incredible life experiences that will never leave me...amazing animals they are.

It's insane these animals even attempt this. There are definitely rotting goat carcasses at that bottom of that dam. Just one little slip and the fall is unrecoverable.

First time I've ever seen close ups of the damn texture and the hooves. The damn texture is much rougher than I assumed. Now I can see how they can climb it. And it's interesting they're using the edges of the hooves not the fact that they're hooves widen with pressure which is what locks them into slots in mountains.

Why?

Their hooves are like little natural crampons. I'll always remember first seeing them in Colorado, it was mind boggling watching them on a cliff face.

I guess when they get to the top they turn around?
