LOST ANOTHER ONE YESTERDAY...

submitted by Zyklonbeekeeper to HDLunited 1 monthMar 8, 2024 14:20:23 ago (+53/-1)     (HDLunited)

...good guy, his name was Jim, one year older than me. Jim loved the outdoors and bagged many a moose with his 300Win mag.

I remember back in 1996 when he was an auxillary with the provincial police and a lead with the Search & Rescue team, he called me all distraught needing a crane right away at a site. I removed a crane from a project site and had the operator head immediately to the "situation"...it was there that I discovered that Jim's brother in law was trapped underneath a building that had collapsed from ground movement. I saw only legs protruding from the ground and they were contorted in an unnatural manner indicating that things were not going to end well...and the guy's son was trying to scratch at the dirt and debris fanatically with his bare hands with others trying to dig down. I ordered the operator to set into position where just the one corner would be picked, no fucking around...after getting the corner of the building into the air Jim got his brother in-law out...it was not good. I'll never forget that boy as he watched his mangled father being dragged out of that mess, and the disbelief in Jim's sickly pale white face...fuck, he couldn't even stand up for about 15minutes.

About 3weeks later Jim called and asked what he owed for the crane to which I told him that there is no bill and that I did it for him.

Jim and I weren't close but we were long time friends and despite my "alleged" reputation and wild station in life he would always hire my cranes for the projects he managed. He judged people by their actions and how they treated him.

Fuck he was a good guy...RIP JIM

RIP

I've lost so many over the last ten+ years that I'm just numb from it.

[ - ] Zyklonbeekeeper [op] 7 points 1 monthMar 8, 2024 17:43:42 ago (+7/-0)

It's non stop now...it's not like I'm oblivious to the aspect of mortality but holy fuck it's every fucking day that people I've known for so many years are dropping "suddenly" but mostly prematurely....I can understand some young age cancer or mishap cases beyond one's control but not this...at one time it was expected to lose someone to cancer at around 70-75 because of their smoking, drinking or bad diet/bad choices and it was understandable, but not this.
I remember about a year and more back there was a female Italian doctor, and I posted about her grimm prognosis here to which she blasted the WHO and governments about the fate to come with the vex vax and she stated that in about 18months time the world was going to see the truth about this poison...based upon her claim it put us into around June/July/Aug of this year...I'm crediting her with being 100% accurate.
THIS IS GENOCIDE

Good run.

Lost mine to pancreatic cancer eight years ago. Grandfather died from a stroke two days later. Two months before that my uncle, who was my godfather lost his battle with life.

In a span of a few months I lost all my male role models. I guess it was time to cowboy up.

[ - ] Sector2 1 point 1 monthMar 9, 2024 12:26:00 ago (+1/-0)

Rough. I hope they RIP. Either cowboy up or get out of dodge. Sounds like death ran out of anti-caking agent and started clumping up.

@Sector...are we to assume that you were a good son?...one regret about life that I have, just one regret, I am really pissed at myself for not paying closer attention to the family history in the Russian Empire and as years drifted on I became very deep into our family roots and there was one more conversation I that I really wanted to have with him, it was about the cultural not ideological assimilation of Islamic Turkic Ottomans 500 years ago, that Ottoman migration story always came up at family get togethers, English Ukraine and Russian languages being tossed around at the dinner table, 8 12 16 of us at a time where the feast was prepared by the mothers, sister and cousins and my Bubba in charge...I attended a prestigious University of academic superiority and didn't even realize it...that changed when I got older and deep into it and pumped the "old man" for everything I could get out of him...BUT...I just couldn't agree about the Turks and I remember, late 80s and I'm helping him install a new septic bed and it was a beautiful summer day and he's talking Russian Empire past and how the Mormons in Alberta and Utah stole documents from him that were my grandfather's that apparently (only) the Mormons could research and authenticate, he thought they were good people and then goes right back to 1956 and mentions how my grandfather (and a lot of Russian people) hated the Mormon sect, then he says that the Turks in Russia would always say that they were jews etc and I remember saying to him that he was wrong and misinformed, he wasn't, I was...and it was always my intention to tell him that he was right and I wanted to know more...and then at 11.00hrs June 20th 2013 I'm having coffee with my older cousin and I get a call from a nurse informing me that my dad had just passed away...I never got to have that conversation with him, he was 86, and that is my only regret...hope you got to finish up with everything you had to say to him...oh yeah, by the way Sector2..................never mind.

[ - ] Sector2 1 point 1 monthMar 9, 2024 00:49:35 ago (+1/-0)

I wasn't the best son, and we didn't see eye to eye on everything. He just recently managed to send me one message on telegram, wanting me to vote for Trump. Sigh. I might have to now.

Don't worry about your dad. He knew he was right.

Thanks, Z.

I'm sorry for the loss ZBK, he sounded like a stand up guy that every one of us would appreciate. Good on you for helping in the time of need too, that's what we need more of in this world.

[ - ] Hosagawa 2 points 1 monthMar 8, 2024 18:05:04 ago (+2/-0)

Thanks for the story and may your friend RIP. We are losing too many good guys these days. It's good to remember them so the younger folks can learn by their example.

[ - ] SirNiggsalot 1 point 1 monthMar 9, 2024 08:23:33 ago (+1/-0)

Sounds like Jim was a real man, a stand up guy.
Those are increasingly rare.

May he rest in peace.

[ - ] DoughGoy 1 point 1 monthMar 9, 2024 02:08:12 ago (+1/-0)

It's interesting the stages we go thru in life. First, you and your friends graduate high school. Next, you start going to weddings for all your friends. Then you and your friends start having kids and going to each other's kids birthday parties. Then eventually you get to the point where everyone you know starts dying.

I'm sort of in the long, lonely lull after kids start getting older and before people start dying.

Not exciting to look forward too.

Anyways, sorry to hear about your friend. Hopefully God brings peace to him, his loved ones and yourself.

Damn man. Sorry to hear about another loss. I’ll keep you and your friends in my thoughts bud. Thanks for sharing your stories. RIP Jim.

You are losing a lot of your friends lately. Hate to say it, Zyk, but it may be old age.

Did he take the shot?

[ - ] Zyklonbeekeeper [op] 1 point 1 monthMar 9, 2024 00:48:38 ago (+1/-0)

@Ragnar...yes he did ,and as far as I know at least one boost, here's the kicker, all of the Trade Unions in the country arbitrary enforced the vax as a condition of being dispatched to a project....my crane company is signatory to the INTERNATIONAL UNION OF OPERATING ENGINEERS and they were adamant about me enforcing their mandated, I told them to fuck off and told all my employees that the shit hadn't even been through the trial and testing process and they should stay clear of it but it was their choice to which I was not going to enforce...the fucking Union hated me...only 1 guy listened to me but I didn't give a fuck, I wasn't getting it....but I'll bet 90% of unionized trades workers are vexxed....people don't see how they're being duped and it really is driving me mad that they're weakness and ignorance is causing a lot of trouble for me and us

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 1 point 1 monthMar 8, 2024 23:57:01 ago (+1/-0)

Damn bro, I recall the last friend you lost. I think we’re about the same age and I hope I’m not dealing with a ton of this anytime soon. I only have a few friends. I’d like them to be around awhile. Already lost one, but that was in 2008. ✌️

[ - ] Zyklonbeekeeper [op] 1 point 1 monthMar 9, 2024 00:33:20 ago (+1/-0)

Yeah ICEMONKEY, I lost 2 neighbors since Christmas with one neighbor one month ago being a life long, closer than family friend and I lost a good Slavic cousin just before Christmas and I've got the last close cousin in Ukraine military that I have not heard from since Aug 26th 2022, I'm just blank over all of the people I knew who dropped "suddenly"...it's like what the fuck, who's next?

[ - ] TheOriginal1Icemonkey 1 point 1 monthMar 9, 2024 01:18:27 ago (+1/-0)

Man, that’s rough. Im sorry you’re having all this come at you like it has. I have a close friend who has lost a few of his close friends (not people I know) and I feel bad for him. He’s a good dude and does everyone right all the time. I feel like you and he are kind on the same trip. Hang in there my friend. You’re a solid guy. I don’t know why good people suffer. We just do. 🙏

You're a good man and a good friend. I have hired cranes before and this is not typically a service you can mobilize at the last minute or comes cheaply.

[ - ] Zyklonbeekeeper [op] 1 point 1 monthMar 9, 2024 01:04:24 ago (+1/-0)

@HeyJames....precisely...you wouldn't believe the people out there that are totally clueless about the Crane Rental industry and all the risks, responsibilities and liabilities involved with it....but what a fucking world that industry opens up....from garage roof trusses to downed aircraft and train derailments and beyond that too...just a point of interest, at the 9/11 ground zero site there were two large cranes always in the daily news reports, one was a White colored an LR750 750ton Lieberr conventional crane, the other was a red colored M28,000 1,000ton Manitowoc conventional crane, the M28,000 was shipped out of my branch here in Canada and was on that site for 9 months at $1,800.00 per hr x 24 hrs a day x 7 days a week for 9months, I was only manager at the time before going on my own 2 years later.

Sorry for your loss

Did his friend survive?

[ - ] Zyklonbeekeeper [op] 0 points 1 monthMar 9, 2024 05:55:24 ago (+0/-0)

@Smedle...no, there was no way anyone would have survived, the building crushed down on him when crawling through the under trench towards the cavity, theoretically the depth of the trench should have provided enough recess for him to crawl out with the building supported by the top of slope on the trench, everything was done proper but nobody took into account actual ground shift...a couple hundred yards from the building is the lower level of an escarpment with a creek which flows to a resevoir a half mile away and the 1st rule of Civil Engineering is an escarpment doesn't stop moving until it hits the sea...but it wasn't like the building was all that close to the top of that escarpment where ground shifting is a problem, nature is unpredictable, and the project was geo-tech certified by a private geo-engineering firm and two municipal civil technicians (waste of taxpayer money, fucking useless but that's protocol in accordance with the purchase order system, all factors per to a project must be accounted for and signed off on by all 3 parties, municipal dead heads wait for the outside geo report before signing anything...there's only one way out of a liability situation re purchase order protocols, and it has to be installed into the protocols upon tender by the contractor(s), government won't do it...it's an indemnity clause regarding "any and all unforseen variables", without that clause and shit goes down someone's going to be out of a lot of money (forfieture of performance bond, legal fees, lost revenue due to legal complications) or jail time...an unforseen variable clause leaves the issuer of the purchase order holding the bag rather than the contractor...the company Jim was managing had it in their tender but regardless, a guy died and really, it was nobody's fault...it just goes to show that everything can be done to keep everyone safe on a job and still shit happens.
Apologies for the read.

[ - ] Smedleys_Butler 1 point 1 monthMar 9, 2024 15:25:14 ago (+1/-0)

Crazy. I've never seen trench collapse working on pools or ponds, but one guy was lucky to be alive stuck in one. Always try to be careful, but never know what can happen

[ - ] ItsOk2bArian 1 point 1 monthMar 8, 2024 18:27:56 ago (+1/-0)

Did the bro-in-law live? You allude to death but didn't actually state the conclusion of that part of the story

[ - ] Zyklonbeekeeper [op] 2 points 1 monthMar 8, 2024 18:35:54 ago (+2/-0)

@ItsOk2bArian...no the bro in law was DOA when I got there but you know it was hoped that he wasn't...I've been rehashing that event all day and it's like it just happened.
