windows 11 is so fucking bad that they hide the shutdown mode option. it only gives update and restart

Just switch the "power off button" setting in Windows power management to "Shut down".

I should point out that upon starting the computer after a command prompt shutdown it ended up going ahead downloading and installing updates upon boot and would not let me log in until finished

They completely move the shutdown option when they want you to do a update

Turn off Windows "Automatic Updates" and see if it come back as an option?

Windows updates only get worse. Up until a few years ago I was still on 7 or XP...I don't remember which one. But I have 10 now and I wish I still had 7 or XP .

AtlasOs is available for win11 now. It strips out a lot of bloat and spying in windows. It'll still be win11 but much better, faster, snapier, and without a bunch of the crap.

Would recommend installing it on a fresh win11 os though....

Press CTRL+X for eXpert menu, its faster anyway. Then press whichever hotkey you want, U for shutdown.
