Had this old maple tree removed yesterday. I knew it was old and rotten, but check this out. Volume warning.

This 80 year old tree was ten feet from the house. I had no idea it was this fucked up. Dodged a major bullet.

If you ever see a stump you want to identify, it helps to know that hardwood rots from the inside out and softwood, mostly conifers rot from the outside in.

Interesting. I know every tree on my property and probably most in the region. Didn’t know about the rotting thing. Fucking scary. You would not have known this tree was sick except for a couple of obvious smaller limbs that were bad. I have tons of valley oaks and some cottonwoods. A few sycamores, an elm or two and a newer maple and mulberry I planted.

If you drop any more trees, you can drill holes into the logs and insert mushroom spore dowels. Pretty much just put them off in a corner and check during the rainy season in a year or two. Check tree type compatibility - oak is best.
