So much food and cooking/preparation techniques have developed in an entirely regional manner due to the availability of both the food types, the materials for it's preparation, and the dietary requirements of the population living under those conditions (such as the Inuit, whose diets are high in animal fats, like whale blubber. They need those calories to survive in a frozen environment). Sometimes the food and it's preparation are simply a matter of what is possible under the local conditions. Sometimes traditional forms of spices are found to have naturally occuring biological properties that grant a survival advantage, like the anti-bacterial properties of hot peppers and garlic.
I've been as hungry as it is possible for a human being to be and still not die from it. I've had all manner of dishes, from all over the world, of almost every kind and type, prepared in almost every way you can possibly imagine (and some that you might have a bit of trouble imagining), from the very simple to the very complex. Each meal satisfied a certain need or desire that was at hand.
I do know this. It helps to be hungry. It lends a greater appreciation for any meal.
Canadian food. All Dressed potato chips. Malt vinegar on french fries. Poutine. Glory Bowl (not glory hole, you faggots). Tiger Tail ice cream. Nanaimo bars.
