You have to do this with mental (and actual) children sometimes. They're doing something that hurts you, and sure, you can take it, but there's a limit. You tell them to stop, and they don't believe it's that bad or for whatever reason they keep doing it, so finally you realize there's an empathy miscommunication, and you give it back to them. Once they experience it for themselves, then they can realize the damage they're doing.
