What is a good email alternative to Gmail?

submitted by veridic to AskUpgoat 2 monthsFeb 27, 2024 19:45:25 ago (+3/-0)     (AskUpgoat)

If you wanted to recommend an alternative to gmail for someone who had a free account, what would you recommend?

I suggested proton because i was using their VPN with 1000 different countries on a 7 day trial and just resigning up after 7 days with their free email by creating another email.

Almost got a full year of an 90/mo VPN.

Mail.com never seems to work and is heavily compromised

Proton mail, FairEmail, or just build your own email server bro.

That's good advice. I did for a while and it worked well. There are good mail servers that are easy to set up and use.

Mailfence isn't horrible. Not bad if you don't do mountains of emails. They have a "free" option.

Everything!

Others might datamine every message, but they're probably not as good at it as the google.

Whatever you decide, it's worth keeping in mind that your messages won't be any more secure than whatever's going on with the other end. If you're exchanging emails with a gmail user (also noting that they host email services for a ton of other private domains as well) then all those emails are being scanned by them as well.

Well, if you're looking for privacy and security, there's nothing. If you're looking for a service that won't in try to pry into every aspect of your online life, which right now is what most people here want, I'd recommend Proton. I use their VPN because it's reliable and fast. Since I pay for the VPN, the give me a free email account where I can use ten aliases that all go there to the same account, but the recipients aren't aware of that. They also have storage, Proton Drive, which is okay. All in all, you get what you pay for, and right now, I pay not to have Google pry through every fucking thing I do on line and send me ads and recommend videos.

Proton is compromised.

I know, they're all compromised. At this point we just want an email client that's not totally invasive. No one expects it to be private or secure.

Private, secure. @Kozel turned me on to this some time ago. I used protonmail for years and it turns out their a scam.

What do you think about https://librem.one/?

[ - ] Lost_In_The_Thinking 0 points 2 monthsFeb 29, 2024 10:13:28 ago (+0/-0)

Have not used it, in fact, I hadn't heard of it until now.

Just build your own email server bro

At least one person will unironically say this. You watch.

I didn't have any problem doing it. I stopped when I let my domain name expire.

LoRa, or knocking on doors.

[ - ] paul_neri -1 points 2 monthsFeb 27, 2024 23:17:57 ago (+1/-2)

There is none. Gmail is the best imo.
