The Fresnel lenses in those things are amazing if you like melting steel and setting things on fire.

I do, actually. I usually use jet fuel to melt steel, though.

[ - ] allAheadFull 4 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 21:05:41 ago (+4/-0)

Make sure you insure the steel first.

[ - ] Weredawg 2 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 23:09:48 ago (+2/-0)

Twice.

[ - ] Clubberlang 1 point 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 19:24:47 ago (+1/-0)

How do you melt steel with mountain dew?

[ - ] Weredawg 1 point 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 23:09:31 ago (+1/-0)

It's tricky, but doable. Learned that from an old government contractor.

With 2-3 of those lenses you could easily heat water for:

- a steam-powered electric generator
- household water purification, and use.

It's 100% free, and you would only need a few focused on a heat-exchanger setup to do it.

1990's Big Screen Projector?

I bet your parents paid ~$2-3k for that. Which would be over $4K in today's dollars.

[ - ] Centaurus [op] 7 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 14:52:20 ago (+7/-0)

It's nigger-proof, too.

[ - ] KosherHiveKicker 6 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 15:11:07 ago (+6/-0)

It can be stolen due to the amount of work needed to move it?

LMAO

[ - ] GrayDragon 5 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 18:19:57 ago (+5/-0)

I accidentally clicked my car trunk opener before going to sleep one night. I had a $100+ battery charger in the trunk, now easily accessible. In my nigger and crackhead area, no one stole it. I talked to one of my shadier friends and asked why no one stole it. His answer? "It weighs too much."

Multiply early 90s dollars by 2.3 to get 2024 dollars.

Thanks jews!

Even Voat is a dating app if you are Indian enough.

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 6 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 16:35:42 ago (+6/-0)

You were.

19" B&W at my house until I turned 14 and then, then we got a 26" color tv WITH A REMOTE. I had 2 channels that I could watch and a third sometimes in the evening.

[ - ] MuricaPersonified 4 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 17:14:51 ago (+4/-0)*

We had an old 19" wood-panel Zenith that was color with very early digital face button layout, with a flap that exposed a bunch of analogue dials for fine adjustments. I think it was remote compatible but we didn't have one. Really fancy for its time. The thing was a damned tank; it took a direct lightning strike while on. It fried the power button into the "always on" position and screwed up the colors and picture real bad. Half an hour of dialing it back and it looked just fine, but we had to nigger-rig... splice a switch into the power cable.

Oh, and it got struck by lightning a second time. Lasted 30yrs before finally burning out.

[ - ] GrayDragon 3 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 19:40:56 ago (+3/-0)

My parents were ultra-rich (not really) in the 70s with an outdoor giant antenna that would rotate when a dial was turned next to the TV.

I have no idea how it even worked. Mechanical engineering is a complete mystery to me.

E: Also, when the antenna was rotating, you could hear it through the whole house.

[ - ] RMGoetbbels 2 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 17:25:50 ago (+2/-0)

I think it was remote compatible but we didn't have one.

Hello my fellow remote control brother from another mother. Boy, switch to channel 4 and move the ears

Can I come over and play Atari?

[ - ] Centaurus [op] 2 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 18:36:30 ago (+2/-0)

I hope you like Pong!

[ - ] PotatoWhisperer2 2 points 2 monthsFeb 25, 2024 01:33:42 ago (+2/-0)

That's how I got into electronics. People often throw out "broken" electronics for free. I'd take an old TV and fix it's channel selector or whatever. Often, back then anyways, it was just gummed up with cigarette smoke and pet hair. A bit of elbow grease and isopropyl alcohol would often net me a new upgrade to my system. And my old stuff would go to my younger siblings.

Of course I learned to respect electricity the hard way as well, lol.

But I did have rich this morning:

https://files.catbox.moe/j0lg37.jpg

I bought this fucking monstrosity while drunk. Now that I am used to it, I am glad I did.

[ - ] Gowithit 2 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 18:27:04 ago (+2/-0)

Your wallet is very trendy right now. I've got $5 if you're willing to sell.

[ - ] Clubberlang 1 point 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 19:29:24 ago (+1/-0)

It goes well with the 80s wood paneling.

[ - ] Peleg 0 points 2 monthsFeb 25, 2024 13:30:50 ago (+0/-0)

Man I'm hungry.
You don't mind if I grab an apple while I'm here, do you?
Is that a container of those peanut butter filled pretzel bites? That would go great with the apple!

[ - ] PeckerwoodPerry 4 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 15:12:26 ago (+4/-0)

My back hurts looking at that fuckin thing.

[ - ] Prairie 3 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 15:49:30 ago (+3/-0)

I knew those were BS even when I was a kid. Never wanted one. Oh and video games would burn in, because they used CRTs behind with the brightness to the fucking moon.

[ - ] HonkyMcNiggerSpic 2 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 22:13:12 ago (+2/-0)

My mom and dad also had one the moment they came out. They also had a crack sattelite box back when everyone had those big ass dishes in the yard. I used to watch all kinds of shit from all over the world but usually liked to watch Jap stuff as it was funny and they did not give a fuck. I had a tv like this also when I moved out.

[ - ] Peleg 1 point 2 monthsFeb 25, 2024 13:50:11 ago (+1/-0)

I worked for this guy when I was a teenager. We installed and repaired those giant satellite dishes. We stopped for a break one day and he started giving me advice, which is something he had never done before. He pointed to the dish we were working on and said, "peleg, these things are already out dated. Rca and a new company, I think it's called dish, have come out with small 18 inch dishes that go right on the side of people's houses. A smart young man would save up some money and invest it in this company. These things are going to be a big success."
I think dish, or direct stock was somewhere between 50 cents and $2.00 at the time.
No. Stupid me. Spent my paychecks on fishing equipment and whores. My life would sure be a lot better off if I had listened to that wise man.

You are compared to over 90% of the planet. If your parents made $35K or more per year when they bought this you were in the top 1%.

[ - ] Clubberlang 1 point 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 19:24:03 ago (+1/-0)

Watching E.T. on a 75inch flat screen.

How did kids watch TV on such a small TV like Elliot has?

Because Elliot wasn't Asian.

[ - ] AlexanderMorose13 1 point 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 17:19:44 ago (+1/-0)

We had one of those when I was growing up. Mine had a weird stain on the inside, kinda like a small splatter, towards the bottom right corner. Pretty sure that my Dad lied and bought one secondhand. It was still nice of him, though.

I was always tempted to rip the thing open and clean the insides. Was it just me, or did the screen get dirtier over time?
