#Their World Stopped

While ours kept going, which is why it’s virtually impossible to talk to a Boomer about anything anymore.

All through the 80’s and well into the 90’s, it used to drive me crazy when KQ92 would play its annual list of most-requested songs, which would inevitably end with “And number one, for the twenty-third straight year, is Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin!”

This is KQ’s top-ten most-requested songs as of 2017:

1. Won’t Get Fooled Again by The Who
2. You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC
3. Money by Pink Floyd
4. Kashmir by Led Zeppelin
5. You Wreck Me by Tom Petty
6. Turn the Page by Bob Seger
7. Another Brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd
8. Baba O’Riley by The Who
9. Hotel California by Eagles
10. Layla by Derek and the Dominos

I’m pretty well-versed in music, but I’ve never even heard of the Tom Petty song, and I didn’t know the name of either the Led Zeppelin song or the correct name of the “teenage wasteland” song by The Who. The newest song on there was recorded 44 years ago. The only surprise is that the Boomers finally got tired of listening to Stairway to Heaven, which fell from its perennial top-spot down to number 30.

Keep in mind that this is a radio station located in the home town of Prince Rogers Nelson. And there isn’t one single Prince song in the top 500 most-requested.

It's been recognized for years that the music that was popular in your early teens -- 14 or thereabouts -- will become the standard for what you will refer to as "classic" music for the rest of your life.

Add that to an era of exceptional music being created/performed by exceptional musicians with a relatively small amount of corporate interference and you have the perfect storm, popular musically speaking.

Review playlists created by subsequent generations and it quickly becomes obvious that their tastes are all over the place. This could be taken as support for the notion that there has been a lessening in overall quality. I don't think many people will argue that over the past few decades the majority of 'popular' songs are mostly interchangeable within their genre.

My point being that the songs such as OP lists are enduringly popular for a good reason, and not just because a whole generation is frozen in time.

Though Hotel California is and always has been laughably bad. Which just goes to show that there's no accounting for some people's taste.

[edit] adjusted my wording

It's been understood for decades that the music that was popular in your early teens -- 14 or thereabouts -- will become the standard for your favorite music for the rest of your life.

Hahaha, well shit, I'm glad there are exceptions to rules like this. When I was a teenager I listened to a lot of Slayer and metal, and in my mid-teens I discovered progressive rock in Dream Theater. As a grown man, pretty much all I listen to is post-rock, bands that most people have never heard of like Isis, Neurosis, Red Sparrowes, Carved into the Sun, Cult of Luna, Amenra.

The worst thing about growing up listening to classic rock is that I know songs and band names, but not which bands did which songs.

Stupid fucking DJs never told us what was playing. They probably expected every listener to be a boomer.

You sound like me, I've had this rant a few times. It came from working in a shop environment where the only stations they allowed on was "rock" stations.

I now hate all of the bands you've listed and most of their songs. Some of them are objectively shitty music, like KISS. Some of them are good musicians with good songs, but after hearing it for the millionth time at age 17, you start to despise this oldie bullshit.

Post-rock is better than anything out there, and I will fight anyone on that. Here's an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wc0YsC_cII&t=1310s

I see young people wearing Doors shirts.
Talk about standing the test of time.

And all that Operation Mockingbird backing surely didn't hurt.

The thing is, with The Doors...I objectively am aware they are a product of that shit. I also just enjoy the music.

EDIT: I'm a classically trained pianist. For Christmas one year my parents bought me The Doors anthology collection of sheet music for piano. I played their songs for hours while most guys my age played video games. It was what I did for fun as a teenager.

[ - ] lord_nougat 0 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 20:16:39 ago (+0/-0)

No argument with that.
As teenager, I just wanted to do the silliest things possible with small internal combustion engines on go-karts and mini bikes, and to come up with the creepiest, most deathrockiest riffs on electric guitar. And then trying to replicate my favorite jazz solos on trumpet.

But then, one day I did find 'Alive She Cried' live album by the doors. I really liked and still like that album. My dad took my mom to a Doors concert, probably before I was conceived. She was a little bit impressed, even though she was more a classical / baroque kind of gal at that time. And I was a little bit weirded out hearing that story as a teenager, but whatever.

As I've long said, "Boomers are the generation that never had to finish growing up..."

They are, generally speaking, still stuck in their early to mid 20s. That's actually what it's like to talk to them.

I'm in my mid 30s. When I talk to other people in their mid 30s it's as if I'm talking to people who are more mature than the average boomer.

And then there's this...

If your at a good party and everything's great, but you're the guy who's in a bad mood and pissed off at the world, then yes, you are the asshole in that situation, BUT...

If you're in a shit situation and everyone's pissed off trying to fix things, but you're sitting their smiling like everything's fine, then YOU are the asshole, for not being pissed off. That's the boomers, everything fucking sucks...has sucked...for well over a decade now, and yet the muscle in your brain for responding appropriately to a situation that sucks has apparently atrophied in them. Everything sucks and it appears they, quite literally, don't know how to even adult.

And even worse, as young people respond appropriately, meaning by being pissed...they laughed at us like our attitude was the problem. Well...look who's laughing now.

Some of us showed up for the party on time, the others have to scrounge for unfinished beers and half eaten tuna salad.

[ - ] we_kill_creativity 0 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 20:12:24 ago (+0/-0)

Some of us showed up for the party on time,

That would imply you had the choice to show up on time or not. It was a complete accident of your birth that you were born when you were.

[ - ] Sector2 0 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 20:42:32 ago (+0/-0)

I know, but the intensity of boomer jealousy is funny. The only part that matches reality is the "it's all our parents fault", which is just mimicking the popular boomer meme from the 60s.

[ - ] we_kill_creativity 0 points 2 monthsFeb 25, 2024 10:29:45 ago (+0/-0)

It's not jealousy though...it's pure rage and hatred. And it's justified. Why do you think anyone is jealous of boomers? You're like the trust fund kids of generations. No one hates you because you inherited an easy life...everyone just hates you for pissing it away in such a way as to make the world suck for everyone else. Your two comments in this thread really, literally, is what OP's post is about. Literally right now I can't even communicate with you.

[ - ] Sector2 0 points 2 monthsFeb 25, 2024 11:02:02 ago (+0/-0)

Your two comments in this thread really, literally, is what OP's post is about.

It's the irony of essentially becoming boomers themselves in their anger that's the thing. "Don't trust anyone over 30" was supposed to be our mantra, and many accepted it. Now it's "everything is the boomers fault". It's like everyone forgets who really runs things.

So yeah, it's funny to watch it happening again, but the after-boomers will get their turn in 20 or 40 years. Will they appreciate the irony then? Ankle biters of the 2050s will be gassing the 'tiktok tranny generations' and blaming everything on you. It will be a hoot, believe me.

Anyway, do kids today really think it was boomers who defeated the Germans and put control of the world solidly in the rubbing hands of the jews?

[ - ] fritz_maurentod 0 points 2 monthsFeb 24, 2024 15:13:45 ago (+0/-0)

I'm not a boomer and my world also stopped. I don't listen to new music, don't play new videogames, don't watch new movies (with very few exceptions). I basically refuse to consume post-2000 mainstream media. I also kind of figured out what the bigger problems of the world are, what's going to happen next and why, so I don't even care much about staying informed about the small details either.

Watch the first episode of My favorite Martian.
You'll see why.

True but everything that came out after the 70s really just isn’t that good comparatively

Tangerine is far better than Stairway.

It is since I changed the lyrics.

Tangerine, tangerine, she had the biggest tiddys I ever seen, she was my slut, oh, she kept it clean, and now I put my face, between
