US ranchers being pushed out of business by the tens of thousands by retailers like Walmart importing poison beef from foreign meat packers.

Buy from a local rancher instead!

We've lost 44% of our ranchers since 1980. The ranchers that are left are barely breaking even while working a second job. Their children will not want to ranch after watching their parents struggle like this against mega corporations.

Fair market price today would be $8.31 a pound. If you're paying less than $6 per pound for hamburger it's definitely got "pink slime" meat treated with ammonia from a foreign source. The (((FDA))) removed the requirement for labeling meat with slime in it.

Walmart, Kroger, Cargill, Tyson, JBS, and others are buying the cheapest meat they can find and it's poison.

Ranchers are taking steps to directly sell their products online via 100% American owned-supplied processing plants.

Just one example - https://fedbythefarm.com/best-grass-fed-beef/

If you can't buy locally from a small processor, then buy from them online.

Two years ago, I spent about $1,500 on local grass-fed beef, and another $800 on a new 21 cubic foot stand up freezer. The beef came out to about $6/pound and it has absolutely been worth it.

The order was actually for $3,000 of beef (I think we got 1/2 a cow) and I split it with a close friend. Definitely the way to go.

It's expensive at the outset, to be sure, but you save a lot in the longer run and the beef is much higher quality than what you'd find in the stores.

I've noticed this problem. People who make in America want to sell a premium product. Maybe it is a premium product. But the most successful businesses in America to pushed us forward didn't do that. Look at Henry Ford and the Model T. His goal was to make his vehicle affordable to everyone. But affordability is not the goal of most US firms because they feel like they can't compete. But they better because premium and volume don't mix. If we want manufacturing to have a certain level of volume in this country someone has to do the volume.

It's not that making things in America is that expensive. It's a matter of pricing strategy. Nobody wants volume. They just want margin. If everyone in the country does that you don't have a production base. If we price things at a level where you have to be guilted into buying it it isn't sustainable.

You are correct. Volume cant happen without large independent butcher facilities and rancher co-ops. Neither of which exist, thus the next best thing for the little guy is margin. Once local rancher networks and client bases are formed, they will have to collectively open a slaughter facility to allow volume

The grocery store I go to has meat from, and packaged in, my state. So that's what I buy. They also have a lot of other stuff from around here, which is good because it saves on hauling it elsewhere I guess.

I'm happy to say I've bought a half a cow a year for the last few years, splitting the other half with friends. The cows come from farmers we know, who's kids play with ours, and it's a win-win.

After butchering we were at about 4-5 bucks a pound, and about 450 lbs per year, 100% grass fed. ($1800-$2250), some of the weight is bone in stuff.

Next time we're going to mix in pork fat to help reduce some of the grass flavorings.

Finish with grain to get rid of the "grassy" flavour. Start 1 month before slaughter, and yo-u'll see your marble score increase, as well.

That's what I've heard, I need to get them to that, perhaps I'll buy the grain to make it easier.

That's it... I'm buying half a cow. About $4K in my locale.

[ - ] NeedleStack 3 points 2 monthsFeb 22, 2024 22:51:30 ago (+3/-0)

Holy shit. We can get a full cow (about 400lbs) for around $2000. Shop around.

I stand corrected, I mixed up two farms. It's $3.9K for 482 pounds of grass fed beef. It comes out to $8.09 per pound, but I believe delivery is included. I bet they would give me a break if I were to pick it up myself. It comes with all of this:

Ribeye Steak (20 - 14 oz steaks)

New York Strip Steak (18 - 14 oz steaks)

Filet Mignon Steak (10 - 8 oz steaks)

Top Sirloin Steak “baseball cut” (16 - 8 oz steaks)

Beef Outside Skirt Steak (4 - 8oz steaks)

Flat Iron Steak (4 - 8 oz steaks)

Flank Steak (4 - 8 oz steaks)

Fajita Meat (10 - 8 oz packs)

Stew Meat (25 - 16 oz packs)

Chuck Roast Boneless (8 - 64 oz packs)

Top Round “London Broil” (4 - 64 oz packs)

Picanha (Coulotte) (2 - 40 oz packs)

Tri-Tip Roast (3 - 40 oz packs)

Eye of Round (2 - 64 oz packs)

Rump Roast (6 - 48 oz packs)

Short Ribs Bone-in (2 - 20 oz packs)

Brisket (2 - 200 oz packs)

Ground Beef 80/20 (295 - 16 oz bricks)

Seems pretty good to me. Is it still worth looking for something better?

It's always worth shopping around but that sounds like a great package. Some places will deliver parts of your order every few months so that you don't have to store ALL the meat at your place in one go.

Chicken breasts at Walmart are as big as my head.
WTF is in those?

[ - ] allAheadFull [op] 1 point 2 monthsFeb 23, 2024 00:59:58 ago (+1/-0)

They were bred for decades and they're full of antibiotics and growth hormones. Some of them get such large breasts that they fall over and die on the floor.
